The present invention describes a novel process for preparing 3-chloro-2-vinylphenol which, owing to the chemoselectivity achieved, also allows direct conversion into (3-chloro-2-vinylphenyl)methane-sulphonate.

In general the present invention concerns a method for conversion of particular 4-alkyl-2- hydroxyphenols and 4-alkyl-2-alkoxyphenols into 3-alkylphenols. More specifically, this invention relates to a novel process of selectively forming meta-alkyl phenols of various alkylphenols, such as for instance converting the fraction of 4-alkyl-2-hydroxyphenols and 4- alkyl-2-alkoxyphenols into high yields of 3-alkylphenols.

A process for synthesis of sulfonated, arylated 3-pentadecyl phenol (cross linking catalyst) of formula I starting from Cashew Nut Shell Liquid. Formula I wherein R is benzenesulfonic acid; X is —SO3H, where n is 0 or 1; wherein the process steps comprises hydrogenating cardanol with 5% Pd/C in presence of lower alcoholic solvent at 70° C. under 600 psi hydrogen pressure to obtain 3-pentadecyl phenol; arylating 3-pentadecyl phenol to obtain 3-pentadecyl diphenyl ether; and sulfonating the 3-pentadecyl diphenyl ether to obtain compound of formula I.

This specification discloses an operational continuous process to convert lignin as found in ligno-cellulosic biomass before or after converting at least some of the carbohydrates. The process comprises thermally treating the ligno-cellulosic biomass and then subjecting the thermally treated ligno-cellulosic biomass to a step of fiber shives reduction to produce a low viscosity slurry. The continuous process has been demonstrated to create slurry, raise the slurry to ultra high pressures, deoxygenate the lignin in a reactor over a catalyst which not a fixed bed without producing char. The conversion products of the carbohydrates or lignin can be further processed into polyester intermediates for use in polyester preforms and bottles.

A catalytic process for dehydration of an aliphatic C 2 -C 6 alcohol to its corresponding olefin is disclosed, The process continuously (lows through a reaction zone a liquid phase containing an aliphatic C 2 -C 6 alcohol to contact a non-volatile acid catalyst at a reaction temperature and pressure to at least partially convert the aliphatic C 2 -C 6 alcohol in the liquid phase to its corresponding olefin. The reaction pressure is greater than atmospheric pressure and the reaction temperature is above the boiling point of the olefin at reaction pressure, but below the critical temperature of the alcohol, and the olefin product is substantially in the gaseous phase. After the contacting step, the olefin containing gaseous phase is separated from the liquid phase. The invention also relates to catalytic processes such as a hydrolysis of an olefin to an alcohol, an esterification, a transesterification, a polymerization, an aldol condensation or an ester hydrolysis.
