This heat and moisture exchanger (HME) is characterized by comprising: a heat and moisture exchanger material that is formed by coiling a strip-shaped porous body, said porous body having a plurality of slits formed therein that are arranged along the lengthwise direction, into a spirally-wound shape with the slits facing radially outward; and a housing that accommodates the heat and moisture exchanger material. The use of such a structure for an HME makes it possible to reduce pressure loss and improve moisture retention capabilities by means of a relatively simple structure, thereby allowing the inexpensive provision of an HME that lowers the burden on a patient. More specifically, little pressure loss occurs because the slits that are formed in the porous body work as flow paths for exhalation and inhalation, said porous body makes it possible to exhibit superior moisture retention capabilities and moisturizing capabilities, and it is thus possible to provide an HME exhibiting superior production characteristics.

The device comprises a powder-containing cavity (5) which opens into a flow passage (4). The flow passage is arranged to direct an inhalation air flow across the cavity opening. A circulating flow is thereby induced in the cavity (5) by the phenomenon of shear driven cavity flow. Powder is entrained in the circulating flow and deaggregated before exiting the cavity and becoming entrained in the flow of air along the flow passage (4).

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a device (10) and method for measuring the resistance of inhalers (20) to air flow. In particular, the device and method can be used to measure the resistance to air flow of dry powder inhalers (20), which are used for pulmonary drug delivery. The device (10) has a pair of chambers (12, 18) to mount and enclose an inhaler (20) within. Each chamber (12, 18) has a respective valve. The device (10) has further a pressure controller (22), a flow controller (24) and pressure and flow sensors and microprocessors configured to control opening and closing of the valves and to detect and analyze the corresponding signals.
