Compositions containing particles of biologically active agents with sizes in the micron and submicron range and methods for making and using such particles are described herein. In the preferred embodiment the biologically active agents are peptides, proteins, nucleic acid molecules, or hydrophilic synthetic molecules. The particles have a size ranging from an average diameter of about 100 nm to about 2000 nm, preferably about 200 nm to 600 nm. Optionally the biologically active agents contain a polymeric coating. The particles are formed by adding a biologically active agent to an aqueous solution, mixing a nonsolvent that is miscible with water with the aqueous solution, and precipitating particles of the biologically active agents out of the nonsolvent: aqueous solution combination. The nonsolvent is typically a C1 to C6 alcohol, preferably a C2 to a C5 alcohol. In the preferred embodiment, the nonsolvent is tert-butyl alcohol.

A scanning magnetic microscope SMM (20) includes a sensor (10) for sensing a magnetic field generated by a specimen (78), the sensor including one of a MTJ, a GMR, or an EHE sensor; translation apparatus (22A-C, 52) for translating the sensor relative to a surface of sad specimen; and a data processor (50), having an input coupled to an output of said sensor, for constructing an image of said magnetic field. The sensor preferably includes one to three sensing units each defining a sensing axis for sensing a component of a magnetic field from a specimen, the sensing units disposed such that the sensing axes are orthogonal to one another. Pluralities of such sensors can be disposed in two or three dimensional arrays. The SMM can be used for examining the current flow in ICs, electromigration, magnetic data storage media, biomagnetic systems and magnetic ink used to print currency.

The present invention is based on discovery of genes that are up- or down-regulated in inhibitory avoidance, e.g., long-term memory, which genes are therefor believed to have roles in memory consolidation. In particular, we have discovered that memory consolidation involves the regulation of expression of such genes as zif268 (EGR1), insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), glutamate receptor (1 (GluR1), glutamate receptor 2 (GluR2), c/EBPβ and VGF. For ease of reading, these genes are collectively referred to herein as 'LTM genes', and their encoded proteins as 'LTM proteins'.

The invention pertains to a human N-type calcium channel isoform, hα1B+SFVG, which is involved in central nervous system signalling, and nucleic acids relating thereto. The present invention also includes fragments and biologically functional variants of the human hα1B+SFVG channel. Also included are human N-type calcium channel hα1B+SFVG subunit inhibitors which inhibit human N-type calcium channel hα1B+SFVG subunit activity by inhibiting the expression or function of human N-type calcium channel hα1B+SFVG subunit. The invention further relates to methods of using such nucleic acids, polypeptides, and inhibitors in the treatment and/or diagnosis of disease, such as in methods for treating stroke, pain, e.g., neuropathic pain, and traumatic brain injury.

A plurality of textiles (14) to be sorted each has a portion that includes an electromagnetic radiation emitting and amplifying material. The textiles (14) are illuminated with a laser (20). A narrow band laser-like emission of at least one wavelength from the portion having the radiation emitting and amplifying material occurs in response to the laser (20) illumination. The textiles (14) are sorted based on the detected laser-like emission. The radiation emitting and amplifying material can comprise at least one stitched-in thread (32) comprising a substrate material and the electromagnetic radiation emitting and amplifying material in combination with scatterers, or a patch containing the electromagnetic radiation emitting and amplifying material and the scatterers.
