摘要: A method for construction of a scaleable font database (430) comprised of data stored in a compact form for retrieval in one of several usable forms common in digital typography. The method comprises the steps, for each text character (210) of a font collection of: generating a digital representation of the character (210) and identifying it with respect to character code (516) and typeface design (514), determining segment endpoints (220) and associations (230) within a model (250) of the character (210), measuring actual dimensions (240) for the associations (230), and determining segment descriptors (546) for each contour segment (214) comprising the complete outline of the character (210).

摘要: A non-rotating optical shield (52) is generally cylindrical in shape and surrounds a rotating optical deflector (55) to reduce airflow and optical distortion, as well as acoustic noise. A beam entrance aperture (32) is provided in an end (34) of the shield (52) allowing an input beam to project onto the rotating deflector (55) along the deflector's spin axis (20). The entrance aperture (32) is sealed by a window (30) to prevent air from being drawn into the shield (52) by the action of the rotating optical deflector (55). The deflected beam (19) exits the shield (52) through a beam exit aperture (38) in the side (40) of the shield (52) which can be enclosed by an optical element (66). Clearances between the shield (52) and the rotating deflector (55) are minimal. The shield (52) reduces temperature gradients in the surrounding air thus reducing optical distortions caused by changes in refractive indices of the deflector and surrounding air. An additional feature of the shield is a fan-like portion (54) which extends radially outward from the cylindrical body portion of the shield (52) at the beam exit aperture (38), to enclose the exit beam (19) as it scans through as range of angles. The fan-like portion (54) extends as far along the exit beam path as desired and advantageously reduces acoustical noise generated by the rotating optical deflector (55).

摘要: An apparatus buffers the movement of sheets cut from a continuous web. Each sheet has a sheet leading edge and a sheet trailing edge.
Feeding means (26) are provided for feeding the web leading edge into a buffer (40) at a first speed.
Cutting means (16) cut said web to form a first sheet having said sheet leading edge and said sheet trailing edge, and to form a new web leading edge.
A single pair of roller means (46) grab and hold said web leading edge when it first enters said buffer (40) at said first speed and for then advancing said sheet leading edge of said first sheet out of said buffer at a second speed. Said feeding means (26) feed said new web leading edge into said buffer at said first speed while said sheet trailing edge of said first sheet is advancing out of said buffer at said second speed.

摘要: A method for automatic compensation for misregistration of printing plates in printing of polychromatic document pages or images, in which a trapping map image is superimposed upon the structured graphic image representing the layout of the document page or image from which it is derived, so as to prevent light leaks and other errors at the boundaries between color regions within the image. Traps are selected automatically and applied to a boundary map comprising the set of boundaries between regions of different color of the original image. The selection process uses the results of a plurality of separate methods for ranking possible traps each of which is assigned an overall score by means of a weighted sum of the ranks obtained by each of the separate methods, with the resulting score used as the basis for automatic trap selection among the set of possible traps. The weights applicable to the score are previously determined according to several methods, such as a least squares fit procedure in which traps are judged subjectively by "experts" and correlated with the ranks obtained by each of the separate methods.

摘要: A method and apparatus are disclosed for accelerated detection of a data stream for embedded sequences of data bits referred to as "multi-byte sequences" in a data stream, used for high level interpretation or structuring of the data. The data stream is monitored continuously during normal data transfers between buffers along a data path for which several types of data may be transferred in interleaved fashion, without additional time used in the data transfer process. For data in which the special byte sequences are to be detected if present, the existence of data bytes associated with the special byte sequences is flagged, enabling byte-by-byte scanning to be skipped for those transfers in which no sequence is flagged. Special character sequences which begin in one data transfer and are completed in the following one are also indicated.
