摘要: A steel service pipe (12) is connected to a main (10) by a tee (14). A flexible assembly (18) is inserted through the open end of the pipe (12) and through the tee (14) into the main (10). The flexible assembly includes a section of lower stiffness (22) and a ball and socket connection (24) of even lower stiffness at its leading end. The ball (30) is connected to a weight (34). The weight (34) falls down on entering the tee and creates a turning moment on the assembly (18). A plastic pipe (60) is inserted through the open end of the pipe (12) over the assembly (18) and is inserted through the tee (14) into the main (10). The pipe (60) has a corrugated leading end (64) which is more flexible than the remainder of the pipe (60) and has a tapered nose (64) terminating in a cylindrical mouth (66) which enters an aperture (70) in a liner (72) in the main (10).

摘要: An excavated opening (10) through a pavement (12) of a highway and through the underlying base material (14) to expose a gas main (16) is filled by (i) mixing on site cement, foaming agent and water to produce a fluid grout (26), (ii) mixing the grout with loose excavated spoil (22) in the opening, (iii) agitating the mixture using a hand-held poker vibrator (30), (iv) and repeating this procedure until the level (40) is reached. The level (40) corresponds to the underside of a protective layer (50) which is subsequently applied. The majority of the excavated loose spoil from the opening is reused.

摘要: A replacement pipe is installed within an existing service pipe (1) by first advancing a sealing means (6, 8) along the existing pipe to a position adjacent its junction with a main pipe (2), then deploying the sealing means to seal against the inner surface of the existing pipe (in the example shown, by pumping sealant (10) into the space between the seal body (6) and the pipe (1), and subsequently advancing the replacement pipe along the existing pipe. The space between the two pipes is then filled with sealant and finally the sealing means is opened, in the example shown by withdrawing a guide rod (5) and its collar (7) on which the sealing means was advanced into position.

摘要: A method for producing synthesis gas (essentially a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide) from a mixture of methane and oxygen comprising partially oxidising the methane by bringing the reactant gas mixture at a relatively low temperature (100 °C to 950 °C) and at a pressure of up to 15 bar into contact with a defined nickel - aluminium Feitknecht compound/alumino-silicate clay mineral based catalyst. Resulting synthesis gas may be mixed with further oxygen and be further partially oxidised without being subjected to an intermediate compression stage to produce a second synthesis gas suitable for direct use in a high pressure downstream process for producing a chemical product, such as methanol.

摘要: A pipe (10) of polyethylene is reinforced by two layers (12, 14) of polyethylene tape wound around the pipe in opposite directions under tension. The pipe contains carbon black and the layers are unpigmented and free from fillers and are transparent to infra-red radiation to which the first major surface (21) is exposed. The radiation is in the near infra-red region and has a substantial part of the radiant energy of a wavelength of less than 2.5 micrometers. Very little radiation is absorbed by the layers but a very high absorption occurs in the outer surface of the pipe. This causes the interface between the second major surface (36) of the layer (12) and the first major surface (38) of the pipe and between the second major surface (28) of the layer (14) and the first major surface (30) of the layer (12) to reach temperatures at which fusion welding in the layers welds them together and welds the layer (12) and the pipe (10) together.
