摘要: An array of cylindrical end-caps (14) with separate or integral lenses is stacked with its members in close contact, forming inter-cylinder gaps between every subset of three adjacent cylindrical lenses. Conductive fibers (20) are disposed in the inter-cylinder gaps. Heat that would otherwise accumulate in the array is removed through the conductive fibers and transmitted to an external heat sink.

摘要: A hybrid optical/electronic wavefront includes an electro-acoustical device, such as a Bragg cell, that is used to upshift an optical reference signal. An optical test signal and the frequency upshifted optical reference signal are optically heterodyned to create a signal having a frequency equivalent to the beat frequency of the two signals. The optically heterodyned signal is then converted by a detector to an electronic signal having the same phase as the optical test signal. The output of the detector is a sinusoidal signal having the same phase as the phase of the optical test signal. This signal is filtered by way of an AC filter and mixed with a second clock signal. The low frequency product of the mixer is passed by way of a filter and converted to a square wave by way of a comparator. The output of the comparator is applied to a simple pulse counter and used to disable the pulse counter. An electronic reference signal formed by mixing the two RF signals, filtering the output, and squaring up the output by way of another comparator. The reference signal is used to start the pulse counter. A clock signal for the pulse counter is developed by squaring up the RF driving signal applied to the electro-acoustical device by a comparator. The pulse counter counts the clock pulses while it is enabled. The pulse count is linearly related to the difference in phase between the optical test signal and the frequency upshifted signal.

摘要: An OFF state, that is the maximum attenuation level, for an electro-optic attenuator/switch (14,32,36) results when either a first or second control voltage is applied to the control input. An AC generator (80,82), coupled to the control input, generates a square wave signal having minimum (V-Vπ) and maximum (V+Vπ) peak voltages that correspond to the first and second control voltages, respectively, so that the maximum attenuation level of the light beam being switched is provided by the electro-optic attenuator while either of the minimum and maximum peak voltages is applied to the control input. An ON state is achieved by applying a voltage pulse with a magnitude (V) corresponding to the minimum attenuation level. The ON voltage pulse is added to the square wave. This permits operation of the electro-optic switch in a normally OFF state without requiring a DC bias voltage and allows the prevention of DC drift.

摘要: A system is disclosed in which a geographic area of interest can be selected, and photographic images of the selected area can be downloaded and displayed by a user in an efficient and timely manner. The geographic area of interest may initially be selected by various input means such as a map, longitude/latitude coordinates, a global positioning system (GPS), and the like. Once the particular geographic area has been selected, photographic images corresponding to the selected area are downloaded to the user. The photographic images may be stored in a suitable data storage system such as a server. Alternatively, the photographic image data may be generated real time and downloaded to the user. In one embodiment, a relatively low resolution image of a large geographic area is initially displayed to the user, and the user can then select a limited region of the image for closer viewing. The limited region of the photographic image may then be downloaded to the user in a higher resolution format, thereby reducing the amount of high resolution data that must be transmitted to the user. Various display devices may be used, such as personal data assistants (PDAs), laptop computers, desktop computers, vehicle-mounted computers, tablets, cell phones and the like. The display device may also be used as the input device to both select the geographic area of interest and display the photographic images of the selected area.

摘要: A method for synchronizing frame clocks in a plurality of processors comprises the steps of sending data packets from each of the processors to each of the other processors wherein each of the processors receives the data packets and identifies two of the data packets having the largest phase difference. The largest phase difference is used to determine a target synchronization phase angle, and the period of a frame clock is adjusted so that the frame clock approaches the target synchronization phase angle.

摘要: The optical hold unit (100) of the present invention includes an optical modulator (108) that has an electrical input, an optical input, and an optical output. A 1xN optical splitter (106) is also provided that has an optical input and N optical outputs. In addition, N optical paths (112) are individually coupled to the N optical outputs and carry one of the N output signals. Each optical path has an associated propagation delay. Optical delay elements may be located in any of the N optical paths that carry the output signals. The optical delay elements serve to lengthen the propagation delay (114a-e) of the optical path (112a-e) in which the optical delay element is located. In an alternative embodiment, the optical hold unit (200) includes an optical modulator (108) that has an electrical input, an optical input, and an optical output. An optical resonator (202) is also provided and connected to the optical output of the modulator (108). The optical resonator (202) also includes a partially transmissive output (222) to which an optical path is connected. The optical resonator (202) may also include a gain medium (208) or an optical switch (210).

摘要: An extendable leading edge (20a,20b) for the fuselage (12) and wings (14) of an aircraft (10) is disclosed. The leading edge (20a,20b) may be extended from a retracted position adjacent to the fuselage (12) and wings (14) to an extended position. In the extended position, the leading edge (20a,20b) increases lift of the aircraft (10) at low speeds. In the retracted position, gaps associated with the leading edge (20a,20b) are avoided.
