摘要: An analyte detection system is provided with calibration information uniquely specific to the set of test strips to which the sample is to be applied. The calibration information may be stored in permanent memory of the testing device, such that the device is discarded after use of all the test strips in a kit, or it may be stored in a calibration chip accompanying the set of test strips and distributed therewith, thereby enabling re-use of the testing device with a different set of test strips and associated calibration chip.

摘要: A sample of a body fluid such as blood or interstitial fluid is obtained from a body by glancing a portion of a user's skin, preferably in an area other than a finger tip to form an incision. After the needle (42) has been removed from the incision, a force is applied to depress the skin in a manner forming a ring of depressed body tissue in surrounding relationship to the incision, causing the incision to bulge and the sides of the incision to open, whereby body fluid is forced out through the opening of the incision. A stimulator member (64) is mounted to an end of a lancet carrying housing (40) for applying the force. The stimulator member (64) can be movable relative to the housing, and can be either heated or vibrated to promote movement of the body fluid

摘要: A reagent and method for determining the levels of 3-hydroxybutyric acid in a sample are provided. The reagent comprises a ferricyanide salt, a catalytic amount of a first enzyme operative to catalyze the oxidation of 3-hydroxybutyric acid in the sample, a cofactor corresponding to said first enzyme, and a catalytic amount of a second enzyme operative to catalyze the oxidization of the cofactor and the reduction of the ferricyanide. The reagent is incorporated into a test strip that generates an electrical output signal indicative of the level of 3-hydroxybutyric acid when the reagent is contacted with a sample.

摘要: Apparatus for assaying a fluid sample with radiation capable of exciting fluorescence in fluorescent material comprises a totally internally reflecting, unitary elongated substrate (24) transmissive to both the excitation radiation and to the fluorescence. The fluorescent material includes at least a moiety of an antibody-antigen complex that includes a tag that will provide the fluorescence when excited by an evanescent wave generated by the excitation radiation. The substrate (24) includes an elongated fiber (36) and an integral lens (38) formed to guide the optical radiation into the fiber (36) within the bounds of a critical angle to assure total internal reflectance. A hollow elongated enclosure (40) is disposed concentrically about and spaced from the fiber (36) so as to provide an interspace of capillary dimensions. A test implement (22) supports the elongated substrate (24), has a reservoir (28) for receiving a fluid sample to be assayed, and is selectively movable to an operative position whereat the fluid sample is caused to flow onto the fiber (36) and, by capillary action, into the interspace between the fiber (36) and the enclosure (40). The apparatus further includes a source of the excitation radiation (74), refractive means (38) for focusing the radiation toward the lens (38), detector means (78) for detecting fluorescence radiation emitted from an end of the fiber (36) responsively to the excitation radiation, and optics frame means (66) for mounting all components in fixed relation to the lens (38) for introducing the excitation radiation into the lens (38) within the critical angle.
