A variator (2) having a pair of semi-toroidally recessed races (11, 12) mounted to a housing (6) for rotation about a common variator axis. A roller (14) is mounted between the races to transfer drive between them at a variable drive ratio. A sun gear (25) is mounted between the races, as is a ring (gear 26). The ring gear is radially outboard of the sun gear. Mounted between the sun and ring and meshing with both is a carrier gear (33) upon which the roller is mounted in a manner which enables it to both spin about its own axis, when turned by the races, and also to tilt relative to the races to vary the drive ratio. A control pinion (27) is also arranged between the sun and ring gears meshing with both. The control pinion is able to rotate about its own axis freely, but the pinion axis is fixed with respect to the housing.

The invention is concerned with a continuously variable transmission incorporating a variator of the type having at least two co-axial races (D1-D4) between which drive is transferred at a continuously variable variator ratio. The variator races are mounted for rotation about a variator shaft (16). The transmission has a layshaft (18) which is laterally separated from the variator shaft. It has two epicyclic gears. A splitter epicyclic (14) has an input member driven from the transmission input (10) and two output members arranged respectively to drive the layshaft and the variator shaft. A recirculater epicyclic has first and second input members for coupling respectively to the variator shaft and to the layshaft and a recirculater output member. An arrangement of clutches is provided for selectively engaging any of at least three regimes. In one regime the recirculater output member drives the transmission output. In another the layshaft drives the transmission output. In a third, the variator shaft drives the transmission output. The arrangement of the components is such that the variator shaft is co-axial with the transmission output, the recirculater epicyclic, a first coupling, between the recirculater output member and the transmission output, which serves to drive the transmission output in the first regime, and a second coupling, between the variator shaft and the transmission output, which serves to drive the transmission output in the third above-mentioned regime.

The invention concerns an arrangement for control of a continuously variable transmission. The transmission includes a variator (10) having a movable torque transfer part (rollers 18) whose position corresponds to a variator drive ratio. A hydraulic actuator (28) is arranged to exert an adjustable force on the torque transfer part. The transmission further comprises a flow control arrangement which is arranged to receive as control inputs (a) the current position of the torque transfer part and (b) a demanded position for it. The demanded position may for example be determined by driver input. The flow control arrangement is adapted to supply through a s upply o utlet w hich c omniunicates w ith t he h ydraulic actuator a flow of fluid which is modulated in accordance with an error between the two control inputs. The flow of fluid increases with increasing error. A relief passage (110) leads from the said outlet to a pressure sink and is constricted so that fluid flow through it results in a p ressure at the hydraulic a ctuator which is g reater than that of the sink by an amount which corresponds to the rate of flow through the relief passage. The result is a mode of control of the transmission which possesses some of the advantages of both torque and ratio control.

The invention concerns a simple mechanical arrangement for controlling a multi- regime continuously variable transmission. The transmission in question comprises a variator (10) and a gearing arrangement including a low regime clutch (CL) and a high regime clutch (CH). Engaging the low regime clutch places the transmission in the low regime. Engaging the high regime clutch places it in the high regime. The control system comprises a control part (such as a lever) which is movable by the user along a control path from a low ratio end to a high ratio end. The position of the control part dictates variator ratio and transmission ratio. The system further incorporates a low regime clutch control device which engages the low regime clutch when the control part is between the low ratio end of its path and a low clutch transition point, and which releases the low regime clutch when the control part is between the low clutch transition point and the high ratio end of its path. It additionally incorporates a high regime clutch control which releases the high regime clutch when the control part is between the low ratio end of its path and a high clutch transition point, and which engages the high regime clutch when the control part is between the high clutch transition point and the high ratio end of its path. In this way, a mechanical arrangement can be provided which manages both transmission ratio and the clutch changes required upon regime change.

In a continuously-variable-ratio-device ("variator") of the type having races (12, 14, 26, 102) between which drive is transferred by rollers (28) which are movable in accordance with changes of variator ratio, it is necessary to apply a traction load urging the rollers and races into engagement. Each rollers is also subject to a transverse reaction force by a hydraulic reaction roller actuator (32) receiving a i controlled reaction pressure. It is desirable to create a relationship between traction and reaction force, and also to provide for adjustment of this relationship. In the present invention this is achieved hydraulically. A traction pressure related to the reaction pressure is applied to an actuator (72, 100) which creates the traction load. The hydraulics also include a working chaniber (C2, C4, CH1, CH2, CH3) which is selectively connectable to and disconnectable from either (or both) of (i) the reaction pressure and (ii) the traction pressure, the traction force being dependent upon pressure in the working chamber.

A continuously variable transmission is disclosed comprising a transmission input, a transmission output, and a continuously variable ratio unit ('variator') arranged to be coupled between the transmission input (205) and output (240) by means of at least one clutch (230,250) thereby to enable transfer of drive between the input and the output at a continuously variable transmission ratio. The variator is connected to a hydraulic control circuit (50) and so subject to a hydraulic control pressure which is adjustable by the control circuit and is also influenced by changes in variator ratio. The transmission further comprising means (311,310) for adjusting the torque capacity of the clutch while it is engaged so that by controlling torque loading applied to the variator, the clutch influences the control pressure and the reaction torque.
