There is provided a hand operable device for handicapped persons driving a car. More particularly, there is provided a hand operated device for actuating vehicle acceleration and brake pedals. The device includes a brake bar having in a first end attaching means for attachment to a brake pedal of the vehicle, said brake bar having in a second end a joint to a handle bar for transversely supporting the brake bar. The handle bar is provided with means for electronically regulating the speed of the vehicle and attachment means for releasably attaching the handle bar via a mounting piece to (or near) the steering column without the use of tools.

A method is provided to control the acceleration of a motor vehicle from a current speed, wherein the motor vehicle includes an accelerator pedal system able to generate on the accelerator pedal an added reaction force when the depression of the accelerator pedal reaches a given depression level. The method includes the steps of: a) measuring the current vehicle speed; b) determining a target speed of the motor vehicle in function at least of the current vehicle speed or determining from the current vehicle speed a maximum acceleration rate; c) determining at least one threshold depression level of the accelerator pedal that corresponds to the stabilization of the vehicle speed at the target speed or that corresponds to maximum acceleration rate; d) generating an added reaction force on the accelerator pedal if the depression of the accelerator pedal reaches or is about to reach the threshold depression level; wherein at least steps a), b), and c) are automatically repeated as vehicle speed increases.

An automatic start controlling apparatus for automatically starting an internal combustion engine (2). A transmission (6) is coupled to the engine (2). The transmission (6) has a clutch (C1), which is actuated by an oil pump (36) other than the engine (2) when the engine (2) stops. The transmission (6) has an input shaft (6c) and an output shaft (6b). The input shaft (6c) is connected to the engine (2). The automatic start controlling apparatus has a controller (38). When the engine (2) is automatically started, the controller (38) detects whether the clutch (C1) is completely engaged. When the controller (38) judges that the clutch (C1) is partially engaged, the controller (38) reduces the output torque of the engine (2) or limits an increase of the output torque.

A transmission system for a vehicle that has multiple sets of driven wheels (18,24) is disclosed. The transmission system typically drives a first set (24) and a second set (18) of wheels. The transmission includes a disconnect unit (20) being operative, on application of a brake to the first set of wheels (24), to disconnect drive to the first set of wheels, while maintaining drive to the second set of wheels (18). The brake is typically a handbrake operative on the rear wheels. A disconnect unit is disclosed that can be operated by hydraulic pressure generated by manual operation of a handbrake lever, so avoiding the need to provide pump-generated hydraulic power. In a typical embodiment, the disconnect unit is disposed between a centre differential (14) and a rear differential (22). When the disconnect unit disconnects drive to the rear differential, the centre differential is preferably locked.

A target speed is computed from operator power demand and vehicle speed. A target ratio is computed from the target speed and vehicle speed. A ratio command is computed from the target ratio. The control system computes the inertia torque from the ratio command or the target ratio.
