A system is disclosed for minimizing coupling nulls between an electromagnetic field derived from one or more sources and a plurality of randomly oriented RFID tags, wherein the electromagnetic field is rotated relative to the tags such that no tag is persistently located in a coupling null relative to the field. The source of the electromagnetic field may include a passive antenna or loop that changes its orientation relative to a direction of movement of the tags. The source of the electromagnetic field may further include an active antenna or loop that is electromagnetically coupled to the passive antenna or loop. A method for minimizing coupling nulls between the electromagnetic field and the randomly oriented tags is also disclosed.

An electronic label reading system is disclosed having an interrogator including a transmitter for generating an interrogation signal and a receiver for detecting and decoding a reply signal. The system also has an interrogation field creation means including a transmitter antenna connected to the transmitter for generating from the interrogation signal an interrogation electromagnetic field through which objects possessing code responding labels may pass. The code responding labels include label receiving antennas for receiving from the interrogation field a label interrogation signal, means for generating label reply signals, and means for generating from the label reply signals, reply electromagnetic fields. The system also has a receiver antenna connnected to the receiver for receiving the reply signals from the label reply fields. The system is arranged so that the interrogation field and label reply fields provide a communication channel from the labels to the interrogator, and the interrogator includes means for signalling to the labels condition information indicative of the condition of the communication channel.

The moving surface may include cardboard (11) in a roll manufacturing process. Depending on the thickness of the auxiliary antenna the step of applying the conductive film may include cold or hot stamping. A system is disclosed for secure communication between an interrogator and an RFID tag. The system includes means for singulating the tag in a population of RFID tags and means for extracting from the tag, identity data adapted to uniquely identify the tag. The system further includes means for securely communicating the identity data to a secure database, means for providing authentication data by the database and means for securely communicating the authenticating data to the interrogator. The system also includes means for providing a further comunication between the tag and the interrogator, and wherein at least one stream of data between the tag and the interrogator includes random data generated via a random physical process. The tag and database may each include means for maintaining a count of secure authentications. The count may be separately maintained by the tag and database and may be incremented following each secure authentication. A method for secure communication between an interrogator and an RFID tag is also disclosed.

A system for processing articles in a warehousing or merchandising operation wherein information bearing electronically coded labels are attached to the articles to be processed. The system uses the principle of electromagnetic communication in which an interrogator (4) containing a transmitter generates an electromagnetic signal which is transmitted via an interrogator antenna system (2, 3) to electronic labels (5) containing label receiving antennas. The electronic labels (5) are attached to articles as they are processed. Each label antenna receives a proportion of the transmitted energy and operates a reply generation circuit connected either to the label receiving antenna or a separate label reply antenna with the result that an information bearing electromagnetic reply signal is radiated by the label. The interrogator (4) includes an arrangement for detecting the strength of the reply signal which is radiated by the label and for generating a signal which is indicative of the strength of the reply signal.
