A method of increasing blood-brain barrier permeability of selected brain tissue in a subject in need thereof is carried out by: (a) parenterally administering to the subject stem cells that migrate to the brain tissue, the stem cells containing a recombinant nucleic acid, the recombinant nucleic acid comprising a nucleic acid encoding a barrier-opening protein or peptide operably associated with a heat-inducible promoter; and then (b) selectively heating the selected brain tissue sufficient to induce the expression of the barrier-opening protein or peptide in an amount effective to increase the permeability of the blood-brain barrier in the selected brain tissue. Nucleic acids, vectors, stem cells and compositions useful for carrying out such methods are also described.

The present invention provides compositions and methods for wound healing and tissue regeneration. The compositions of the present invention comprise amniotic membrane of the placenta. In certain embodiments, the composition comprises amniotic membrane powder or solubilized amniotic membrane (SAM). In some aspects, the composition is cell-free and rich in cytokines, extracellular matrix proteins, and other components that improve tissue regeneration. In one aspect, the composition is a hydrogel scaffold that comprises amniotic membrane. The present invention reduces contraction and improves blood vessel development in regenerating tissue.

An agent-based modeling system for predicting and/or analyzing brain behavior is provided. The system includes a computer processor configured to define nodes and edges that interconnect the nodes. The edges are defined by physiological interactions and/or anatomical connections. The computer processor further defines rules and/or model parameters that define a functional behavior of the nodes and edges. The computer processor assigns the nodes to respective brain regions, and the rules and/or model parameters are defined by observed physiological interaction of the nodes that are functionally and/or structurally connected by said edges of brain regions to thereby provide an agent-based brain model (ABBM) for predicting and/or analyzing brain behavior.
