The invention relates to a method for treating a floor surface with a self-propelling and self-steering floor-treating device, wherein the treatment of the floor surface is based on a pattern along which the floor-treating device is driven, wherein the pattern has paths lying laterally next to one another, and wherein respective treatment areas are detected and treated in turn by the floor-treating device as the latter travels along a path. In order to provide a method of this type with which the floor surface can be treated in a simple manner covering as much of the surface as possible, it is proposed according to the invention that the pattern is adapted to the size and/or the contour of the floor surface such that respective paths with a treatment area adjacent to the boundary run along mutually opposite boundaries of the floor surface, and paths lying in between are arranged in such a manner that all of the floor surface is treated, wherein the relative position of at least two paths lying next to one another is selected such that at least some sections of their treatment areas overlap.
