The present invention provides liquid crystalline compounds having a high voltage holding ratio and a remarkably high Δ ε value, electric and chemical stability, and having good compatibility with known liquid crystalline compounds, liquid crystal compositions containing the compound, and liquid crystal display devices constituted by using the compounds. The liquid crystalline compounds of the present invention are particular dioxane derivatives represented by general formula (1). Further, the present invention relates to liquid crystal compositions characterized in that the compositions comprise at least one of the derivatives, and liquid crystal display devices constituted by using the compositions.

A liquid crystal composition which not only satisfies various characteristics required of liquid crystal compositions for AM-LCD, but also particularly has an improved low-temperature compatibility, a suitably increased Δn value, and lowered Vth and viscosity. The composition contains at least one compound represented by general formula (I-1) or (I-2) as a first component and at least one compound represented by any of the general formulae (II-1) to (II-7) as a second component, (wherein n represents an integer of 1 to 10; Z1 represents -CH¿2?CH2- or a single bond; X represents F or OCH3; Y represents H or F; and m represents 0 or 1). The composition is useful as a low-voltage liquid crystal material of various modes including active matrix and STN systems.
