The present invention relates to a nematic liquid crystal composition useful as a liquid crystal display material, the liquid crystal composition having negative dielectric anisotropy (”µ), and to a liquid crystal device element including the liquid crystal composition. The liquid crystal composition of the present invention has sufficiently low viscosity (·), sufficiently low rotational viscosity (³1), a large elastic constant (K 33 ), and a negative dielectric anisotropy (”µ) whose absolute value is large, without reducing the refractive index anisotropy (”n) or the nematic-isotropic liquid phase transition temperature (T ni ). Provided is, for example, a VA-mode liquid crystal display element including the liquid crystal composition, the liquid crystal display element having no or minimal display defects and having excellent display quality and a fast response. The liquid crystal display element including the liquid crystal composition of the present invention is useful for an active matrix-addressed liquid crystal display element and used for, for example, a VA- or PSVA-mode liquid crystal display element.

The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of iodinatedphenols,- in particular, it relates to a process including the electrochemical iodination of 3,5- disubstituted phenols of formula (1) to the corresponding 3, 5-disubstituted-2,4, 6- triiodophenols of formula (2), which are useful intermediates for the synthesis of x-ray contrast media, and to the preparation of the contrast media themselves. Provided is a process for producing an isocoumarin-3-yl-acetic acid derivative, characterized by reacting a homophthalic acid derivative represented by formula (a): (wherein Rc, R2 and R are mainly protecting groups) with a malonic acid derivating represented by formula (IV): (wherein R is an organic group including a lower alkyl group; R3 is a protecting group for a carboxyl group; and X is a halogen atom or a -OM group (wherein M is alkaline metal or alkaline earth metal)). According to the above process, various isocoumarin-3-yl-acetic acid derivatives can efficiently be provided.
