摘要: Dolby AC-3 and MPEG-2 audio permit the transmission of audio signals with more than two independent audio channels. If a reproduction device has only a two-channel audio decoder (DEC1) then an external multi-channel audio decoder (DEC2) can be used for multi-channel sound reproduction. If the audio reproduction at the same time accompanies video reproduction, then a synchronization method is required in order to achieve lip synchronism between picture and sound. According to the invention, for the synchronization of a first decoder (DEC1), which merely has two-channel compatibility, with a second decoder, which has multi-channel compatibility, a counting variable is allocated a value (F) which is produced from system parameters such as the data coding method used, the transmission speed and/or the data rate. The data are received by the first decoder and output by the latter to the second decoder, the counting variable being decremented or incremented respectively for a specific volume of data. When the counting variable reaches a value corresponding to the beginning of the decoding by the second decoder, the first decoder then begins decoding the data.

摘要: Virtual surround systems enable a spatial representation of audio signals merely using the front loudspeakers (SL, SR). In this case, the surround channels (C, Ls, Rs) are fed to the two front channels (L, R), the virtual surround effect being attained by these surround channels being processed beforehand. In particular in the case of static objects or objects which are only moving slowly, the quality of the acoustic reproduction by known virtual surround systems is, however, behind the quality in the case of a reproduction by a high-grade multi-channel audio system. According to the invention, it is possible to achieve an improvement in the acoustics by the virtual surround sources being moved. This can be done with constant periodicity or as a function of the amplitude of the front channel signals (L, R). If the virtual position of the surround loudspeakers (SLs, SRs) is specified by filtering of the rear channel signals (Ls, Rs), then this can be varied in particular by alteration of the filter parameters. Equally, however, this can be done exclusively or additionally by means of a different propagation delay, amplification or matrixing of the rear channel signals (Ls, Rs).

摘要: The invention proposes a method to manage the rights associated to a multimedia content item (like digital music, video or software) in order to satisfy both the legitimate rights of the content author or rights owner and the legitimate user of such content. In the time of mass storage devices that can be used as media servers, this requires easy ways to move content as well as the rights to use it, the usage license. Moving the rights to a new location implies that the item at its new location is now the legitimate original version that may be played back or from which (for example) one further copy may be derived. In a simple embodiment, this can be accomplished by swapping the value of a flag indicating original or copy between the previous original and the new version of the item. In future digital systems with encrypted or partially encrypted content, this can be accomplished as well by a descriptor that describes the rights associated to a multimedia content item and a location-specific decryption key associated to it. Advantageously, the original multimedia content item need not be deleted from the primary mass storage device, or media server, allowing for a temporary lease of play back rights to secondary, possibly mobile devices.

摘要: Original digital audio signals are represented as PCM sample values wherein the distance between the values corresponds to the sampling frequency. Digital signals can have a length that is an integer multiple only of this time element. In particular coded digital audio signals are processed block-based, leading to a total length that is a multiple only of the block unit. According to the invention, information about the exact length of the original signal is transferred together with the encoded audio information. Additionally, an information value can be transferred that represents the total encoder and/or decoder delay. The decoder extracts these items of information and adjusts the total length of the decoded signal by cutting off samples from the decoded program or track.
