An apparatus and metliod for heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) employing a near-field transducer (NFT) made of plasmonic ceramic materials or mtermetailics are disclosed. The NFT is made of a plasmonic material as well as a protective outer layer, which provides for longer usefulness and improved performance of the NFT and recording device. The plasmonic materials used include but are not limited to TiN xs , ZrN x , HfN x , TaN x , VN x , TiSi 2-x , TiAl x N y , TiZr x N y, ZnO, SnO 2 , In 2 O 3 . RuO 2 , Lu 2 O 3 , WO 2 , and MgB 2 . Such materials, in combination with a protective layer, provide higher resistances and greater performance at temperatures required for HAMR, ranging from 300 up to 500 degrees Celsius.

In some aspects, the image-based autofocusing utilizes astigmatism in microscope optics for multi-planar image acquisition along a Z axis direction of a microscope. In some other aspects, the image-based autofocusing utilizes astigmatism in microscope optics in combination with chromatic aberration for multi-planar image acquisition along the Z axis direction.

LPCM samples from an LPCM sample 301-1 of a first channel to an LPCM sample 304-1 of a fourth channel in audio data are combined in order to generate a GOLS 310-1. An even number of GOLS are combined to generate an audio frame. Header information is added to the audio frame to generate an audio PES packet, which is multiplexed with a video PES packet and recorded onto a recording medium. As a result, the number of bits of the audio frame is an integral multiple of 32. This increases an affinity with a recording and playback apparatus.
