The present invention is directed to the identification of various cellular polypeptides (and their encoding nucleic acids or fragments thereof) which are expressed to a greater degree on the surface of or by one or more types of cancer cell(s) as compared to on the surface of or by one or more types of normal non-cancer cells. Alternatively, such polypeptides are expressed by cells which produce and/or secrete polypeptides having a potentiating or growth-enhancing effect on cancer cells. Again alternatively, such polypeptides may not be overexpressed by tumor cells as compared to normal celles of the same tissue type, but rather may be specifically expressed by both tumor cells and normal cells of only a single or very limited number of tissue types (preferably tissues which are not essential for life, e.g. prostate, etc.).

The invention concerns compositions and methods for the diagnosis and treatment of neoplastic cell growth and proliferation in mammals, including humans. The invention is based upon the identification of genes that are amplified in the genome of tumor cells. Such gene amplification is expected to be associated with the overexpression of the gene product as compared to normal cells of the same tissue type and contribute to tumorigenesis. Accordingly, the proteins encoded by the amplified genes are believed to be useful targets for the diagnosis and/or treatment (including prevention) of certain cancers, and may act as predictors of the prognosis of tumor treatment.
