A phosphor composition is disclosed. A phosphor composition, comprises at least 10 atomic % bromine; silicon, germanium or combination thereof; oxygen; a metal M, wherein M comprises zinc (Zn), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), strontium (Sr), barium (Ba), or combinations thereof; and an activator comprising europium. The phosphor composition is formed from combining carbonate or oxides of metal M, silicon oxide, and europium oxide; and then firing the combination. A lighting apparatus including the phosphor composition is also provided. The phosphor composition may be combined with an additional phosphor to generate white light.

A luminescent material includes an aluminate phosphor of formula (I) A 1+x Mg 1+y Al 10+z O 17+x+y+i.5z : Eu 2+ , R 3+ , where 0 ≤x ≤ 0.4, 0 ≤ y ≤1 and 0 ≤ z ≤ 0.2. A is selected from Ca, Ba, and Sr and combinations thereof. The aluminate phosphor is doped with a rare earth ion (R 3+ ), which exists in stable multi- valence states in the luminescent material. R 3+ is selected from the group consisting of Sm 3+ , Yb 3+ , Tm 3+ , Ce 3+ , Tb 3+ , Pr 3+ and combinations thereof. Phosphors of formula (I) may be blended with other blue, yellow, orange, green, and red phosphors to yield white light phosphor blends. A lighting apparatus including such a luminescent material is also presented. The light apparatus includes a light source in addition to the luminescent material.

The phosphor material includes a green emitting phosphor composition of general formula I: R3−x−zMxCezT5−yNyO12−x−yFx+y; where 0≦̸x 0 or if y=0, then x>0; R is Y, Tb, Gd, La, Lu or a combination thereof; T is Al, Sc, Ga, In or combinations thereof; M is Ca, Sr, Ba or a combination thereof; N is Mg, Zn or a combination thereof. A long-lived phosphor composition is provided, along with methods for making and using the composition. More specifically, in one embodiment, the phosphor comprises a material having a formula of Ax-y-z Al2-m-n-o-pO4 :Euy, RE2, Bm, Znn, Co0, Sep. In this formula, A may be Ba, Sr, Ca, or a combination of these metals, x is between about 0.75 and 1.3, y is between about 0.0005 and 0.1, z is between about 0.0005 and 0.1, m is between about 0.0005 and 0.30, n is between about 0.0005 and 0.10, o is between about 0 and 0.01 and p is between about 0 and 0.05. RE is Dy, Nd, or a combination thereof. In another embodiment, methods are provided for making persistent phosphors comprising the formulations above. Other embodiments provide applications for such a phosphor, comprising uses in toys, emergency equipment, clothing, and instrument panels, among others.
