This invention provides a thermosetting organic solvent paint comprising (A) a compound having at least two alicyclic epoxy groups in one molecule and having a number average molecular weight of less than 2000, (B) a secondary amino group-containing compound and (C) a thermolatent cationically polymerizable catalyst and further, under circumstances, (D) colloidal silica, and capable of forming a rigid coating film which is hard, tough and excellent in stain resistance, and from which pollutants, if adhered, are easily removed. This invention further provides a method to form a multilayered top coating film which comprises applying, to a material to be coated, one or more species of colored paint and one or more species of clear paint in order, said method being characterized in that the above-mentioned paint is used as a clear paint which is to be applied on the uppermost layer.

There is disclosed a process to form metallic multilayer coating films characterized by coating on the uncured coating surface of a paint formed on a substrate with a composition (B), which contains non-leafing aluminium flake and organic solvent and then by coating, optionally after coating with a topcoat paint (C), with a clear paint (D). According to said process metallic multilayer coating films, which is white, excellent in metallic luster impression and having a high flip-flop effect, can be formed by using non-leafing aluminium flake pigment.

A method of forming a multilayered topcoat film through triple coating and double baking which comprises applying a first coating material (A) and a second coating material (B) to an article to be coated, heating both coating films to cure them, subsequently applying a clear coating material (C), and heating the coating film to cure it, characterized in that the first coating material (A) is an organic-solvent-base colored coating material, that the second coating material (B) is an organic-solvent-base coating material comprising an acrylic resin (b-1) whose backbone has, bonded thereto, two or more side chains each having at least one hydroxyl group and differing in length from each other, a polyepoxide (b-2), and a crosslinking agent (b-3), and that the clear coating material (C) is a powder coating material (C-1) or an organic-solvent-base coating material (C-2) comprising a hydroxylated carboxylated resin (c-2a) and a polyepoxide (c-2b). By the method, a multilayered topcoat film can be formed which is excellent in interlaminar adhesiveness, finish, and film performances.
