This invention relates to a novel class of organosilanes and bis(hydantoinyl)disiloxanes. The characteristic feature of these silanes and disiloxanes is the presence of a hydantoin residue that is bonded to silicon through an alkylene group. Methods are disclosed for their production. The said compounds are useful coupling agents for bonding glass fibres to organic resins and as self-bonding adhesion promoters for room temperature curable silicone adhesives.

Novel silicones having the general formula wherein 0 is an aromatic nucleus, Z is-S- or-0-, R is a bivalent group or a functional bivalent group, each R' is chosen from monovalent hydrocarbon radicals and functional hydrocarbon radicals and any one R' may be the same as or different from another R 1 , R 3 is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon radical or a functional group or atom, x is 0 or an integer of 1 or more, F is a functional group or atom, with the proviso that F is not primary amino when Z is other than -0-, and T is a group chosen from alkoxy, aryloxy or other substituted or unsubstituted oxyhydrocarbyl radical and a group having the general formula wherein Q, Z, R, R 1 , R 3 and F are as defined above and any one R may be the same as or different from the other R and one R 3 may be different from the other R 3 . These compounds may be made by reacting the compound with or with where G denotes alkoxy or aryloxy or other substituted or unsubstituted oxyhydrocarbyl radical under conditions set out in the specification. The compounds are suitable for making copolymers of silicones with other organic chemicals, curing catalys for epoxies, urethane and the like.

Certain organosilane derivatives are prepared by
(i) reacting substantially equimolar amounts of an anhydrous alkali metal - or alkaline earth metal compound having the general formula or the general formula wherein M is an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal, b is the valency of M and R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 ,Z, m,n, q and t are as defined in the Specification, with haloalkylsilane having the general formula wherein R 5 , R 6 , R 7 andp are as defined in the Specification and X 1 is Cl, Br or 1, the reaction being conducted under substantially anhydrous conditions at a temperature of from ambient to 200°C in a liquid reaction medium comprising at least one liquid hydrocarbon boiling at a temperature of40 to 200°C and in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst chosen from onium salts of elements in Group VA of Mendeleeff's Periodic Table and "crown" ethers or cyclic polyethers, the said onium salts having the general formula wherein E is N, P, As, Sb or Bi, R 15 is an alkyl group containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms or a phenyl group and the R 15 groups are the same or different, X 2 is F, Cl, Br, sulphate, phosphate, carbonate alkylsulphonate or fluoroborate and r is the valency of X 2 ; (ii) maintaining the resultant reaction medium ata temperature of from 40 to 200°C for a period sufficient to obtain substantially complete conversion to the desired compound, (iii) isolating the compound (I) or compound (II) by evaporating the liquid reaction medium from the liquid phase of the reaction mixture.

A coating composition comprising a curable copolymer material which is the product of a condensation reaction, preferably a condensation reaction of corresponding molar quantities of an organic diamine and a silicone containing a bis-amino aryl ether or bis-amino aryl thioether and an organic dianhydride in at least one organic solvent chosen from monoalkyl ethers of ethylene glycol, monoalkyl ethers of condensed polyethylene glycol, dialkyl ethers of ethylene glycol, dialkyl ethers of condensed polyethylene glycol, and cyclic ethers containing not less than a 5 member ring, is suitable for use as a wire coating composition, passivation and/or protective coating composition(s) for semiconductor devices and the like. A part or all of the organic diamine may be a macrocyclic crown ether which enables the curable copolymer material to have a chemically bonded chelant embodies therein. The curable copolymer material may be of a block type configuration, a random type configuration, or both, and either may be cured at a low temperature such as ~75°C when diethylene glycol dimethylether is chosen as solvent.
