Novel silicones having the general formula wherein 0 is an aromatic nucleus, Z is-S- or-0-, R is a bivalent group or a functional bivalent group, each R' is chosen from monovalent hydrocarbon radicals and functional hydrocarbon radicals and any one R' may be the same as or different from another R 1 , R 3 is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon radical or a functional group or atom, x is 0 or an integer of 1 or more, F is a functional group or atom, with the proviso that F is not primary amino when Z is other than -0-, and T is a group chosen from alkoxy, aryloxy or other substituted or unsubstituted oxyhydrocarbyl radical and a group having the general formula wherein Q, Z, R, R 1 , R 3 and F are as defined above and any one R may be the same as or different from the other R and one R 3 may be different from the other R 3 . These compounds may be made by reacting the compound with or with where G denotes alkoxy or aryloxy or other substituted or unsubstituted oxyhydrocarbyl radical under conditions set out in the specification. The compounds are suitable for making copolymers of silicones with other organic chemicals, curing catalys for epoxies, urethane and the like.

A lower alkyl polysilsesquioxane having a general formula wherein R is lower alkyl, preferably CH 3 or C 2 H 5 , and n is an integer equal to about 50 to about 10,000, prepared by (a) dissolving a lower alkyl trifunctional silane in an organic solvent at a temperature of -20°C to -50°C to form an organic solution thereof; (b) hydrolysing the lower alkyl trifunctional silane by dropping water into the organic solution at a temperature of -20°C to -50°C under an inert gas pressurised at 1,000 to 3,000 Pa; and (c) gradually heating the organic solution together with a water phase lying therebeneath up to a temperature of 60°C to 100°C under an inert gas pressurised at 1,000 to 3,000 Pa. Also, a flat surfaced insulating layer of a silylated organopolysilsesquioxane having a general formula wherein R' and R 2 are each selected from alkyl and phenyl (preferably methyl or ethyl), and n is an integer equal to about 50 to about 2,000, preferably about 50 to about 500, formed on a circuit board having stepwise differences in height thereon, by applying an organic solution of the polymer; evaporating the solvent; and melting the polymer to flatten the surface of the polymer and curing the polymer.

There are disclosed certain categories of novel spin-coating compositions comprising phosphorus-doped and/or boron-doped silsesquioxane oligomers. Cured interlayer dielectric films prepared therefrom have a superior combination of defined properties, particularly including adhesion (of single-coat and multiple coats) and/or resistance against degradation at temperatures above 500°C. The spin-coating compositions are prepared in a critical manner from critical raw materials.

A method of manufacturing an improved electrical high voltage coated insulator is described. The method involves applying and curing a one-part, room temperature curable silicone composition to the surface of an insulator, the insulator surface having a minimum designated arc resistance. The silicone composition is the product obtained by mixing in the substantial absence of moisture a specified polydimethylsiloxane fluid containing hydroxyl radicals, finely divided aluminium hydroxide filler, a silane of the formula R b Si(ON=X) 4 - b and an optional condensation catalyst. The composition cures on exposure to atmospheric moisture to produce a coating on the insulator that resists the development of leakage currents and flashover failure upon exposure to electrical stress, moisture, contamination, and other outdoor weathering stresses.

Compositions which are stable in the absence of oxygen are formed by mixing the following substantially in the absence of oxygen: (A) 100 parts by weight of at least one mercapto-functional organosilicon-organic copolymer or mixtures of at least two different types of components selected from the following three types: the above copolymers, mercapto- functional organic compounds free of silicon atoms and mercapto-functional organosilicon compounds wherein all three types contain an average of at leasttwo mercapto groups per molecule; (B) 0-200 parts byweight of at least one filler; (C) a catalytic amount, preferably from 0.1 to 6 parts by weight, of an iron carbonyl catalyst selected from the group consisting of Fe(CO) 5 , Fe 2 (CO) 9 , Fe 3 (CO) 12 , dicyclopentadienyldiiron tetracarbonyl, butadieneiron tricarbonyl and cyclohexadieneiron tricarbonyl; and (D) 0.1-6 parts by weight of an acid, such as 2-ethylhexanoic acid, which meets a particular set of criteria. The compositions polymerize or cure to form higher molecular weight products at room temperature upon exposure to oxygen. These compositions are especially useful as coatings such as for paper or as electrical insulation because they possess a rapid rate of surface cure. Elastomeric sealant compositions can be prepared which rapidly become tack-free at the surface and are less prone to surface contamination by foreign matter such as dust during cure.
