Disclosed are novel compositions for embolizing blood vessels which are particularly suited for treating vascular lesions via catheter delivery. In one embodiment, the compositions of this invention comprise a biocompatible polymer, a biocompatible solvent and a biocompatible water insoluble contrast agent characterized by having an average particle size of less than about 10 mu m. In another embodiment, the biocompatible polymer in these compositions is replaced with a biocompatible prepolymer.

This invention is directed to methods for treating aneurysms wherein the aneurysmal sac is filled with a non-particulate agent or plurality of such agents and/or with a fluid composition which solidifies in situ. Filling of the aneurysmal sac employs sufficient amount of the non-particulate agent or plurality of such agents and/or the fluid composition to inhibit blood flow into the aneurysm sac. In addition, the methods of this invention also provide for non-endogenous isolation of the parent artery proximal and distal to the aneurysmal sac from systemic blood flow of the treated mammal. The combination of these features provides for treatment of the aneurysmal sac while, at the same time, inhibiting aneurysm formation and/or regrowth in the diseased portions of the arterial wall proximal and distal to the treated aneurysm.

A catheter according to the present invention includes a multiple lumen catheter (10) for delivery of a liquid embolic composition through a first lumen, and delivery of a solidification agent through a second lumen. The catheter allows adjustment of the relative longitudinal position of the two lumens to control the solidification of the embolic composition within a blood vessel. The multiple lumen catheter system (10) is used by inserting the catheter endo-vascularly into an aneurysm site, and injecting a liquid embolic composition through the first lumen while injecting a solidification agent through the second lumen to wash the area of the aneurysm of blood which has become saturated with solvent, while replacing it with a fresh solidification agent. The controlled solidification of the liquid embolic composition by use of the solidification agent allows the aneurysm to be filled precisely, and rapidly even when the aneurysm is located such that gravity does not cause the liquid embolic composition to flow into the aneurysm.

This invention is directed to novel methods for gynecologic embolotherapy. The methods directly access the blood vessels to be embolized transcervically rather than arterially. The methods provide precise directed delivery of embolizing compositions, and are particularly suited for treating uterine fibroids. Kits containing one or more devices for transcervical injection and an embolizing composition are also provided. In a preferred embodiment, fluid embolizing compositions are used. In a more preferred embodiment, these fluid embolic compositions comprise a biocompatible polymer, a biocompatible solvent and a biocompatible water insoluble contrast agent. In a most preferred embodiment, the contrast agent is characterized by having an average particle size of about 10 νm or less.

Disclosed are novel syringes (10) and catheters (34) for delivering compositions which form solid masses in vivo. These syringes (10) and catheters (34) are particularly useful for delivering embolizing compositions intravascularly.

Disclosed are compositions suitable for use in embolizing blood vessels which compositions comprise an ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer, a biocompatible solvent and a water insoluble contrasting agent selected from the group consisting of tantalum, tantalum oxide and barium sulfate. Also disclosed are methods for embolizing a blood vessel using the compositions described herein.
