The navigation catheter is coupled to the upper layer via the retainer formations from a first end (130a) to a second end (130b) of the guide strap. The stylet includes a flexible elongate member, an electrically conductive member, and a reinforcement member. The reinforcement member is disposed inside the electrically conductive member and is made out of a magnetic material. The reinforcement member reinforces the stylet and provides electrical communication between the conductive member and the locating device such that current induced in the conductive member is transmitted to the locating device via the reinforcement member.

A receiver coil being mounted proximate to a distal end of the medical instrument, the receiver coil being electrically connectable at a proximal end of the medical instrument. A deployable object being disposed and movable within the medical instrument. The deployable object bearing a high magnetic permeability material located proximate to the receiver coil. The high magnetic permeability material and the receiver coil combining to form an inductive element having an inductance that varies in a predetermined manner with the position of the deployable device relative to the receiver coil. A determination of the inductance being performed at the proximal end of the delivery catheter indicates the extension of the deployable device through the medical instrument.
