An interline transfer CCD imaging apparatus in which a rectangular array of photoelectric elements create and store charges which are then shifted vertically by a set of vertical CCD registers to a horizontal CCD register has a corresponding array of color filters in front of the photoelectric elements. The color filters are arranged so that two picture elements form one cycle horizontally, and four picture elements for- mone cycle vertically. From left to right in the first and fifth rows 1, and 1 5 , cyan C y ' and yellow Ye filters are repeated. In rows 1 2 and 1 6 magenta M g ' and green G' filters are repeated. In rows 1 4 and 1 8 the magenta M and Green G'filters are repeated in the opposite order. The cyan C y ' filter transmits green, blue and red light, the red transmission being about 50%. The yellow Ye filter transmits green and red light but not blue. It is arranged that the NTSC color difference signal for rows 1 1 , 1 3 , 1 5 and 1 7 is zero at a reference color temperature for achromatic light. The green G' filter is formed by laminating a cyan Cy' and a yellow Ye filter together. The magenta Mg' filter transmits a higher percentage of green light than in the prior art, and it is arranged that the NTSC color difference signal for rows 1 2 , 1 4 , 1 6 and 1 8 is zero at the chosen reference color temperature for achromatic light.

An array of picture elements in rows ℓ 1 , f 2 , etc provides inputs to vertical charge coupled device (CCD) registers which feed into a horizontal CCD register which provides the video output. In even fields transfers are made from even rows ℓ 2 , f 4 , etc and then, after a one element shift from odd rows ℓ 1 , P 3 , etc so that combined signals ℓ 1 + ℓ 2 , ℓ 3 + ℓ 4 , etc are formed. Similarly in even fields the combined signals are ℓ 2 + ℓ 3 , ℓ 4 + ℓ 5 , etc. The elements have colour filters establishing a 2-element horizontal by 4-element vertical repeat pattern wherein a green component comes from all elements whereas red and blue components are modulated at a 2-element horizontal rate with a line to line phase alternation applying to one of these components, but not the other. In accordance with the invention the said pattern is established using transparent (W), green (G), yellow (Ye) and cyan (Cy) filters, where transparent passes all components, yellow passes red and green and cyan passes blue and green. Every row has at least one filter passing red and at least one passing blue within each 2 by 4 pattern block but the modulation of red and blue is retained as red components pass only alternate filters in odd lines (with phase alternation) whereas blue components pass only alternate filters in even lines (without phase alternation).

Colour filters are arranged in rows (1, to (8) and columns with a vertical recurrence cycle of four picture elements. The filters in every first row (ℓ 1 ,ℓ 5 ) and in every third row (ℓ 3 , (7) are all the same colour, e.g. transparent (W) or spectrally weighted to create a luminance signal. In each second row (ℓ 2 , ℓ 6 ) there is a first set of colour filters (G, Mg) for generating a first colour difference signal component modulated with a two-element horizontal repetition cycle. In each forth row (ℓ 4 , ℓ 8 ) there is a second set of colour filters (Ye', Cy') for generating a second colour difference signal component modulated with a two-element horizontal repetition cycle. The use of filters of the same colour throughout the first and third rows avoids the generating of large vertical colour errors in the output signal of a change-coupled device arrangement providing luminance and colour difference signals from the picture elements, even in the presence of sharp vertical edges which are un-correlated between adjacent rows of elements.
