A functional molecular element having a function controlled by an electric field on a new principle. In the functional molecular element (1), a Lewis base molecule (14) having a positive dielectric constant anisotropy or a dipole moment along the major axis of the molecule is provided in the form of a pendant to a linear or filmy foundation molecule (2) having a conjugated system and exhibiting a conductivity, with a metal ion (3) capable of acting as a Lewis acid interposed between the molecules. When a voltage is applied, the conformation is changed to exhibit the function. The molecules (2, 14) and the metal ion (3) form a complex. When an electric field is applied to the Lewis base molecule (14) in a direction, for example, perpendicular to the paper as shown in Fig. 1(b), the Lewis molecule (14) oscillates within the range of 90 degrees around a vertical axis in the paper plane. When an electric field is applied to the Lewis base molecule (14) in a vertical direction in the paper plane as shown in Fig. 1(c), the Lewis molecule (14) rocks around an axis perpendicular to the paper plane to switch on/off the conductivity of the conducting foundation molecule (2).

An optical alignment film and a liquid crystal thin film are adjacently formed. These films are irradiated with light. The optical alignment film is aligned, and the viscosity of the liquid crystal thin film is lowered because of the increase of the temperature due to light irradiation. The liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal thin film are aligned similarly to the alignment of the optical alignment film by use of the intermolecular force at the interface between the optical alignment film and the liquid crystal thin film. The alignment of the liquid crystal molecules allows the recorded information to be held. While using this optical alignment film, a sufficiently large amount of signals are realized, and the thermal stability and the stability against light irradiation are ensured.

An optical recording medium is capable of linear recording in a photon mode. An organic material changed in molecular orientation on light illumination to exhibit birefringence is used as a recording material. For example, a recording layer having, as a recording material, an organic material changed in molecular orientation caused by trans-cis rearrangement, is changed in birefringence with changes in the molecular orientation of the organic material. The recording system which utilizes the changes in the molecular orientation of the organic material has linear characteristics and gives outputs different depending on e.g., the degree or the angle of orientation, thus enabling multi-valued recording.

The area modulation element can change the area occupied by a molecule through various changes of the structure of the molecule by the control of the electric field applied thereto, and thus can be used for manufacturing a functional device such as an optical filter and an optical screen.

A polymer layer which is present in contact with a transparent pixel electrode controlled by a TFT serving as a driving element and electrically active and the color of which is changed because of electrochemical oxidation or reduction and a polymer solid electrolyte layer provided in contact with the polymer layer and containing a colorant are interposed between the transparent electrode and a common electrode. Because the color changes because of electrochemical oxidation or reduction, the contrast and black density are enhanced and long-term fading is prevented.
