Compounds suitable for use as constituents of ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal compositions, which are esters of formula (I), where R2 and R3 together represent the residue of an alicyclic hydrocarbon ring system where *C is an asymmetric carbon atom and X is a chain of up to three linked aromatic or alicyclic six-membered organic cyclic groups, laterally and/or terminally substituted. Preferred compounds have a formula (II), where R1 is alkyl or alkoxy, A, B, and D are phenyl, fluoro or chloro substituted phenyl or cyclohexyl, n is 0 or 1, Y is a bond or CH2CH2 if n is 0, or a bond CH2CH2COO or COO if n is 1. Preferred groups C(CN)R2R3 are formula (III) and (IV).

Novel derivatives of cyclic and acyclic terpenoid alcohols, having general formula (I) X-(CO)n-O-T1, where n = O or 1, T1 is a terpenoid group and X is a combination of cyclic groups, eg phenyl, cyclohexyl and pyrimidyl. X preferably contains up to three cyclic groups. Preferred derivatives are esters of cyclic terpenoid alcohols, eg menthol, borneol and isopineocampheol, eg formula (II) (-)-menthol. Ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal mixtures and devices containing these derivatives as chiral dopants in a tilted smectic host are also described. The properties of various other derivatives of terpenoid alcohols of formula (I) are also described, eg those of neomenthol, isolongifolol, fenchol, carveol, myrthenol, nopol, citronellol, perilla alcohol and dihydrocitronellol.

These have liquid crystalline properties and may be used as components of liquid crystal materials.

Such compounds may be used in ferroelectric smectic liquid cystal mixtures, especially as pitch compensators. Preferred amides have y as O and X-CO-Z1-CH(R)- as formulae (IV) or (V). A liquid crystal composition and device using these amides are described.

These have liquid crystalline characteristics and may be used as constituents of both nematic and smectic C liquid crystal materials.

Ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal mixtures are provided consisting of two constituents; a smectic host and another containing a chiral compound in which rotation of the chiral centre relative to the molecular core is sterically hindered, so that the chiral compound induces a high Ps in the mixture. A preferred class of chiral compounds is those derived from naturally occurring compounds with chiral groups, especially alpha-hydroxycarboxylic acids, amino acids and terpenoids, e.g. with chiral groups (I), (II), (III). The chiral group is incorporated into a compound containing a mesogenic combination of groups, e.g. with chains of cyclic groups and some mesogenic combinations are described.
