The structure of the photo-catalytic layer (2) includes the structure in which fine particles are packed into gaps between the photo-catalytic particles and another in which they are not. Further, there is a structure in which metals such as Ag and Pt are fixed to the surfaces of the photo-catalytic particles and another in which they are not.

A method of making the surface of a base material ultrahydrophilic which comprises the step of coating the surface with a layer containing photocatalytic semiconductor material such as titania and the step of photoexciting the photocatalytic material to adjust the angle of contact of the surface of the above layer with water to about 10° or less. When this method is applied to the surface of a base material such as mirror, lens or windowpane, the growth of waterdrops is prevented and the base material becomes highly antifogging. The articles treated by this method do not undergo any deposition of contaminants on the surfaces thereof and are readily cleaned by rainfall or washing with water.

Sanitary earthenware products having a controlled glaze surface, being scarcely soiled, having a high durability or being excellent in gloss. Among these products, one of the first type has a surface graze layer formed on the uncoated earthenware face and the average center-line roughness (Ra) of the surface graze layer is less than 0.07 νm. This product is favorable in that it is scarcely soiled and stains once adhered thereto, if any, can be washed away by slightly flushing. A product of the second type is one provided with a surface graze layer formed on the uncoated earthenware face and the surface graze layer has a kurtosis (Rku) of less than 2.70. This product is favorable in having a highly excellent surface gloss. A product of the third type is one provided with a surface graze layer formed on the uncoated earthenware face and the surface of the surface graze layer is substantially made of glassy components and no silica grains of 10 νm or above in grain diameter is observed on the surface. This product is favorable in being scarcely soiled.

A process of making the surface of a substrate hydrophilic by photocatalysis. A substrate is covered with a photocatalytic titania coating (10) which carries on its surface a solid acid increasing the hydrogen bond component (ηsh) of the surface energy at the solid-liquid boundary. On photoexcitation of the photocatalyst, the hydrogen bond component (η¿s?h) is increased by photocatalysis to thereby accelerate the physical adsorption of atmospheric water molecules on the hydrogen atoms of terminal OH groups (12) bonded to titanium atoms present on the surface and bridging OH groups (14) through hydrogen bonds (16). As a result of the adsorption, a high-density physically adsorbed water layer (18) is formed on the surface of the photocatalytic coating (10) to thereby facilitate making the surface hydrophilic. This process is effective in the protection of articles from fogging or staining and the (self)cleaning of articles.
