Disclosed is an inorganic material that can exhibit an excellent photocatalytic gas decomposition function while maintaining an abrasion resistance on a level that is usually required of this type of inorganic materials. The inorganic material includes an inorganic material base and a photocatalyst layer that is formed by firing and is provided on the surface of the inorganic material base, the photocatalyst layer containing: photocatalyst particles; zirconia particles having a BET specific surface area of not less than 10 m 2 /g or crystalline zirconia particles having a mean crystallite diameter of less than 20 nm; and an alkali silicate. The inorganic material including the photocatalyst layer exhibits a high photocatalytic gas decomposition function while maintaining an abrasion resistance on a level that is usually required of this type of inorganic materials.

A method capable of efficiently producing a high-performance material having a high-performance photocatalytic function and a device for the method. A photocatalytic coating composition containing a photocatalytic metal oxide and/or its precursor is applied onto the surface of a base material and the surface of the base material is then quickly heated to fix the photocatalytic metal oxide on the surface. This quick heating makes it possible to efficiently produce a high-performance material having a high-performance photocatalytic function. A device capable of performing this quick heating continuously immediately after the production of the base material can efficiently produce a high-performance material having a photocatalytic function.

A stainproof material which comprises a substrate and an inorganic film consisting substantially of a noncrystalline metal oxide, wherein the inorganic film contains an alkali metal and non-bridging oxygen in an amount effective to clean only by washing with water stains deposited on the surface thereof by an exhaust gas to such an extent as to recover a diffuse reflectance by 75 % or more and is fixed on the uppermost layer of the stainproof material; and a method for manufacturing the same; and a coating composition and an apparatus therefor. This stainproof material is excellent in resistance to stains in the surface of an article especially to those containing oily substances.

When a nitrogen oxide (nitrogen monoxide) is contacted with or approaches titanium dioxide functioning as a photocatalyst and compounded with either an amphoteric metal oxide having basic sites (alumina, etc.) or a basic metal oxide (barium oxide, strontium oxide, etc.), the nitrogen monoxide is oxidized into nitrogen dioxide (gas) with •OH which is an active oxygen species generated by the titanium dioxide upon irradiation with light. Since alumina is an amphoteric metal oxide and barium oxide and strontium oxide are basic metal oxides, oxygen atoms of these metal oxides function as basic sites for acidic gases. Consequently, the nitrogen dioxide, which is an acidic gas because of its molecular structure, is attracted by and chemically bonded to these oxygen atoms. Thus, the nitrogen dioxide is held on the metal oxide at positions close to the titanium dioxide, serving as a photocatalyst.
