A variable reluctance linear motor has a stator and an armature mounted so as to be movable along the length of the stator. Armature bearings are mounted to the armature via mechanical vibration dampers and contact the stator so that vibrations in the stator are transmitted to the bearings and dissipated in said vibration dampers. A sensor is mounted to the armature for obtaining position data for the armature with respect to the stator. A controller then calculates the phase currents for the motor phases based on the position data and a desired force value. The phase currents are calculated to maintain a minimum normal force between the armature and said stator, thereby further reducing vibrations. A conditional filter is applied when armature is within a predetermined distance from a desired location. The conditional filter, after a time delay, clamps the velocity feedback to a predetermined range and simultaneously reduces the velocity loop gain.

An electronic damping system is disclosed which dampens mechanical resonant vibrations of a gantry beam end (16). The system includes a secondary velocity feedback loop in addition to the main servo motor-tach velocity loop. The resonant velocity of the beam (16) is sensed from the movement of the end of the beam (16). The velocity feedback signal (22) is summed (29) as negative feedback with the velocity command signal (30) from the position controller (28). The resultant sum of the signals are combined to form the velocity reference input command signal (32) to a servo power amplifier (34). The servo power amplifier (34) is connected to a main servo motor (42) which controls the movement of the gantry beam (16) in the Y-direction relative to printed circuit board (20).

A feeder mechanism for a pick-and-place machine with an adjustable shutter mechanism is disclosed. The components are contained within pockets formed in a reeled tape. The shutter mechanism includes a pair of spring blades that cover the pocket, but are spread apart by the vacuum tip when the spindle is lowered. In this way, the shutter can maintain the component in the proper position for pick-up while allowing the vacuum spindle to access the component, which, in turn, maintains proper attitude of component while the blades are retracted.

A machine for pre-gluing raw circuit surfaces of printed circuit boards (P.C. boards) at an adhesive station and properly positioning the P.C. boards at a placement station for placement of leadless electronic components (chips) onto the adhesive. A carousel provides program preselected vertical supply of taped components to a feeder assembly which feeds individual chips onto a nozzle of a turret-type vacuum head at a pick-up station. The turret-type head has four nozzles spaced 90° apart about the central axis of the head. As the turret is rotated, a chip is transported by a nozzle, sequentially, from the pick-up station to a centering and testing station, a centering and orienting station, and a placement station. Located between the testing and orienting stations is a chip removal station for ejecting defective or inverted chips. Sensors are located at the adhesive and placement stations to detect defective P.C. boards so that they may be bypassed. A controller, such as a digital computer, provides additional monitoring and controls the operation of the machine.

Thus, mirror image devices may be used for oppositely spaced rows of leads of a DIP, with the spacing between the mirrored halves of the device being adjustable according to the center-to-center (CTC) spacing between leads on opposite sides of the component body. Each plunger of one of the mirror halves is simultaneously engaged by a fluid common to the remaining pistons thereof for extension, as well as retraction, of the lead engaging portions.
