The invention relates to an attachment member (2) and a connecting member (16) for a carpometacarpal thumb joint prosthesis (1) as well as to said thumb joint prosthesis. A method and system for the creation or modification of the wear surface of orthopedic joints, involving the preparation and use of one or more partially or fully preformed and procured components (10), adapted for insertion and placement into the body and at the joint site. In a preferred embodiment, components (10) can be partially cured and generally formed ex vivo and further formed in vivo at the joint site to enhance conformance and improve long term performance. In another embodiment, a preformed balloon (96) or composite material can be inserted into the joint site and filled with a flowable biomaterial in situ to conform to the joint site. In yet another embodiment, the preformed components (10) can be fully cured and formed ex vivo and optionally further fitted and secured at the joint site. Preformed components (10) can be sufficiently pliant to permit insertion through a minimally invasive portal, yet resilient enough to substantially assume, or tend towards, the desired form in vivo with additional forming there as needed.

A prosthetic intervertebral disc (200) is disclosed which can be implanted in the human skeleton, and which can act as a scaffold for regrowth of intervertebral disc material. The disc (200) includes a dry, porous, volume matrix of biocompatible and bioresorbable fibers which may be interspersed with glycosaminoglycan molecules. The matrix is adapted to have in vivo an outer surface contour substantially the same as that of a natural intervertebral disc, whereby said matrix establishes an at least partially bioresorbable scaffold adapted for ingrowth of intervertebral fibrochondrocytes. Cross-links may be provided by a portion of the GAG molecules.

Disclosed is a prosthetic ligament (10) comprising a plurality of substantially aligned, elongated filaments (12). Each filament (12) is a dry, porous, volume matrix of biocompatible and bioresorbable fibrils, at least some of which are crosslinked. The fibrils are short segments of longer fibers of polymeric connective tissue components, or analogs thereof. Each filament (12) establishes a bioresorbable scaffold adapted for ingrowth of ligament fibroblasts, the scaffold and the ingrown fibroblasts supporting natural ligament tensile forces. Also disclosed are methods of fabricating the prosthetic ligament (10), and methods of regenerating ligamentous tissue in vivo.

A prosthetic meniscus is disclosed which can be implanted in a humanoid knee, and which can act as a scaffold for regrowth of native meniscal tissues. The meniscus comprises a three dimensional array of collagen fibers interspersed with glycosaminoglycan molecules. The collagen fibers are present at a concentration of about 65 to 98 percent by dry weight, and the glycosaminoglycan molecules are present at a concentration of about 1 to 25 percent by dry weight. Crosslinks are provided by at least a portion of the glycosaminoglycan molecules, and may consist of at least one of the group comprising chondroitin 4-sulfate, chondroitin 6-sulfate, keratin sulfate, dermatan sulfate, heparinsulfate, and hyaluronic acid.
