A method of coating a substrate, preferably a ship's hull, is described. The method steps comprise (a) applying primer anti-corrosive coat to the surface of the substrate; (b) applying a temporary antifouling coat to the primer coat(s) (a), preferably, in the area of the substrate below the water line, in use; (c) exposing the antifouling coat to water; (d) removing the antifouling coat (b) by water washing to expose primer coat(s) (a); and (e) applying directly onto exposed primer coat(s) (a) from step (d) a topcoat system.
