A method of producing a composite rod from a braze material and a sheet of material comprising cermet 12. The method comprises scoring a surface of the sheet to produce at least one line of localised stress 16A-D and subsequently causing the sheet to break along the line of localised stress to produce chunks of cermet. The cermet chunks are combined with the braze material to produce the composite rod. The cermet material is a composite of a metal and a ceramic and may comprise tungsten or titanium carbide in a cobalt matrix. The sheet of material may be a used cermet cutting tip 10 thus providing a method for recycling these materials. An external force may be applied to aid in the breaking of the material, this may be by the action of a mechanical crusher or press. Thermal stress may be created in the cermet sheet for example by use of a laser to assist with causing the sheet to break. Also provided is a method of hard facing a substrate by brazing the cermet chunks to the surface to be hardfaced.

The present invention relates to a new pre-alloyed metal based powder, intended to be used in surface coating of metal parts. The powder is deposited using e.g. laser cladding or plasma transfer arc welding (PTA), or thermal spray (e.g. HVOF). The powder is useful for reducing friction and improving wear reducing properties of the deposited coating. Such coatings may also improve machinability. As friction or wear reducing component, inclusions of manganese sulphide or tungsten sulphide in the pre-alloyed powder may be used.
