Apparatus (4400) for splicing expiring (4404) and replenishing (4405) webs of a web material includes first and second spaced platens (4401, 4402) having respective facing inner surfaces defining a passageway for transit of the expiring web, where the platens (4401, 4402) are adapted for displacement toward and away from one another in a reciprocating manner. The first platen (4401) is adapted to engage an end of the replenishing web (4405), while the second platen (4402) is adapted to engage and position the moving expiring web (4404). Moving the platens (4401, 4402) together with their respective inner surfaces in close proximity to one another causes a cutting die on the first platen to sever the expiring web (4404) forming outfeeding and infeeding ends of the expiring web, and to attach the expiring web's outfeeding end to the replenishing web (4405). Attached to the second platen (4402) in facing relation to the first platen (4401) and engaging the expiring web (4404) is an ironing pad (4408) to ensure firm contact and adhesion of expiring web (4404) to the replenishing web (4405). During web splicing, the cutting die is transferred from the first (4401) platen to the second platen (4402) to free the replenishing web (4405) from the first platen (44019, with the cutting die engaging and collecting or holding the expiring web's infeeding end.

An object of the present invention is to provide a form-fill-seal machine that can efficiently seal a packaging material. The form-fill-seal machine is provided with: a conveyance unit for downwardly conveying the packaging material; a transverse sealing unit; and a control unit. The transverse sealing unit has first members (11a, 11b) to sandwich the packaging material and sealing the packaging material in a transverse direction, and second members (55, 75) for squeezing the packaging material while sandwiching the packaging material with a prescribed gap left therebetween. The control unit performs first to third control steps. In the first control step, the control unit causes the packaging material to be squeezed by the second members (55, 75) by causing the transverse sealing unit located at a reference position to descend faster than the packaging material being conveyed downward. In the second control step, the control unit causes the transverse sealing unit to ascend while the packaging material is being sealed by the first members (11a, 11b). In the third control step, the control unit causes the transverse sealing unit to move such that the first members (11a, 11b) are separated from the packaging material, and then returns the transverse sealing unit to the reference position.
