Disclosed is a method and a system for determining a cornering angle of a tyre fitted on a vehicle during a running of said vehicle on a rolling surface. The method comprises the steps of: determining the lateral acceleration of a portion of the tyre tread spaced apart from the equatorial plane of said tyre; determining a rotation speed of said tyre; and determining said cornering angle from said lateral acceleration and said radial speed, by using characteristic curves of lateral acceleration amplitude versus predetermined values of cornering angle for at least one rotation speed.

Under certain cornering conditions when the vehicle is liable to over-steer, the pressure supply to the actuators is pulsed so that the front wheels of the vehicle tend to break away more easily, thereby reducing over-steer.

A system for dynamically determining an operating state of a motor vehicle for input to a controller employed to control dynamics of the motor vehicle includes sensors (14,22,24,26,28) for measuring predetermined vehicle operating state. The system also includes a device (16) for predicting a value for the predetermined operating state, which can then be used to determine a correction factor for the measured operating state signal. This correction factor is proportional to the erroneous component of the measured vehicle operating state. Together, measured operating state and the correction signal are used to obtain a compensated operating state signal. This is particularly useful for reducing the effects of sensor drift and DC offset.

Herein, a particular vehicle suspension control arm in a suspension having multiple control arms is designed to create a range of available axial stiffness levels which relates to a range of toe change at the wheel under to lateral loading. In particular, a semi-active device is arranged on a given suspension control arm to allow a change in stiffness that produces a desirable amount of toe change under the presence of lateral loading. This suspension arrangement, when applied to the rear axle of an automobile, has significant merit in being able to enhance maneuverability and stability over a large range of operating conditions at a minimal level of control input energy and with robust failsafe operation.
