    摘要: A drive unit assembly (32) utilizes a single input (38) to drive a pair of laterally spaced wheel ends (34). Each wheel end is suspended independently from the other. The input is operatively coupled to only one of the wheel ends and an exposed axle shaft assembly (36) interconnects the input to the opposite wheel end. The axle shaft assembly includes multiple shaft members (60, 62, 64) to interconnect the laterally spaced wheel ends. One of the axle shaft members is mounted to a vehicle floor structure with a bearing mount (74) and includes connection joints (66) at either end to accommodate the independent motion of each wheel end. The floor and the shaft member move together during suspension travel, allowing the floor to have a lower profile than is traditionally available.

A differential assembly rotates adjacent an opening (48) such that lubrication at the wheel end lubrication level (W1) is rotated into the opening (48). The lubricant within the wheel end assemblies (14A,14B) is maintained at the wheel end lubrication level (W1). The shaft (34) enters the wheel end assembly housing (46A) through a shaft opening (49A) which provides a communication path for the lubricant from the wheel end assembly (14A) back into the axle housing (16).

This means that the overhang of the bus rearward of the rear axle (2) is limited and that the space of the overhang can be effectively utilised to absorb a large number of passengers.

    摘要: The invention concerns an offset axle (1) for low-platform town buses and achieves the object of integrating disc brakes in the offset axle system without reducing the vehicle's aisle width in the axle region and obtaining a sufficiently low platform level in spite of the gantry's being lowered significantly owing to design requirements. Disposed eccentrically in the offset axle (1) is a differential (2) of which the axle shafts (4) are each inserted into a drive pinion (5) of a gantry drive (3) with a demultiplication effect, the drive being freely mounted in a self-centring manner between two intermediate pinions (6) which each transmit half the drive power to a spur wheel (7) in order to drive the wheels. Owing to the two gantry drives (3), the axle shafts (4) are lower than the wheel axles by the depth of the gantry. The axle shafts (4) are mounted eccentrically on the upper edge of the interior of the axle bridge housing (8). They are thus adapted in a bevelled way to a recess (9) in the axle bridge housing (8) so that the platform height can be as low as possible. The disc brakes (10) incorporated in the offset axle system are actuated by a pneumatic cylinder (11) via a shift lever (12), the axis of the pneumatic cylinder (11) being placed within a given angular range radially to the brake disc axis.
