There are described hydrocarbyl-substituted cyclopentenes and cyclopentadienes, the preferred structures containing 1 to 6 alkyl groups which have 4 to 36 carbon atoms in a possible variety of different carbon chain structures. The cyclopentenes are prepared by hydrogenation from the corresponding cyclopentadienes which in turn are prepared by suitable hydrocarbylation. Lubricating compositions containing the cyclopentenes and the cyclopentadienes and their mixtures are described also.

Enhancements and options are disclosed for converting methane into other compounds, via methane-sulfonic acid (MSA). One enhancement involves using di(methyl- sulfonyl) peroxide (DMSP, formed by electrolysis of MSA) as the initiator to start a chain reaction that bonds methane to SO3. Also disclosed are improvements in: (i) using catalysts to convert MSA into olefins, or into methyl-methane-sulfonate, an ester intermediate; (ii) converting MSA into dimethyl ether, a fuel that can be stored and transported under low pressures as a liquid; and, (iii) injecting DME directly into natural gas pipelines as 'makeup' gas, to supplement natural gas supplies.

Methods and systems for recovering dicyclopentadiene from pygas are provided. Methods can include heating pygas to generated heated pygas, recovering a C5 fraction from the heated pygas, and dimerizing cyclopentadiene from the C5 fraction to form dicyclopentadiene. Methods can further include recovering the C5 fraction from the pygas in a depentanizer column. Other methods can include heating pygas including dicyclopentadiene to form cyclopentadiene and hydrogenating cyclopentadiene in the pygas to form cyclopentane.

Methods and apparatuses for increasing an alkyl-cyclopentane concentration in an aromatic-rich stream and methods for processing hydrocarbons are provided. In an embodiment, a method for increasing an alkyl-cyclopentane concentration in an aromatic-rich stream includes saturating aromatics in the aromatic-rich stream to form methylcyclohexane. Further, the method includes isomerizing the methylcyclohexane to form alkyl-cyclopentanes. The method dehydrogenates residual methylcyclohexane to form aromatics in a product stream. The product stream includes aromatics and alkyl-cyclopentanes.
