The present invention relates to the use of inorganic particles having a layered structure as catalyst for the synthesis of aminoplast-aldehyde precondensates, wherein the inorganic particles are either non-modified or modified with at least one amino compound, wherein the at least one amino compound comprises at least one aliphatic amino group, whereby octadecyldiethanolamine is exempted, at least one amide group and/or at least one aromatic amino group. The invention relates furthermore to a method using non-modified and/or modified inorganic particles having a layered structure for synthesising aminoplast-aldehyde precondensates, the precondensates obtained by such a method and their use.
