A lubricating oil composition and method of operating a boosted internal combustion engine. The lubricating oil composition includes greater than 50 wt. % of a base oil, one or more overbased calcium-containing detergents having a TBN greater than 225 mg KOH/g and one or more magnesium-containing detergents. A total amount of calcium from the one or more overbased calcium-containing detergents is from 900 ppm to less than 2400 ppm by weight, and a total amount of magnesium from the one or more magnesium-containing detergents is from 50 ppm to 500 ppm by weight, both based on a total weight of the lubricating oil composition. The lubricating oil composition and the method of using it are effective to reduce low speed pre-ignition events in a boosted internal combustion engine lubricated with the lubricating oil composition.

The invention provides the use of an overbased metal detergent in which two or more different surfactant groups, one being a hydrocarbyl-substituted hydroxybenzoate and another being a sulfonate group, are incorporated therein during its overbasing, and which has been manufactured in the presence of at least one amide-or ester-based co-surfactant, said use being as an additive in a motor vehicle lubricating oil composition to provide lubricant frictional benefits, exemplified by improved high frequency reciprocating rig performance thereof, and/or improved stability of the overbased detergent in the composition in comparison with an analogous lubricating oil compositions made by admixing said overbased metal detergent and said at least one amide-or ester-based co-surfactant.

The purpose of the present invention is to provide organometallic salt compositions that are useful as lubricant additives and/or in lubricant additive compositions to reduce friction and wear, and also have improved solubility in all four types of hydrocarbon base oils (Groups I-IV) at a variety of concentrations and under a variety of conditions. The organometallic salt composition is derived from at least one long chain monocarboxylic acid in combination with at least one short or medium branched-chain monocarboxylic acid.
