The invention relates to a measuring device for optically determining the temperature of a molten metal, comprising: - an optical waveguide to conduct electromagnetic radiation emitted by the metal or by the tip of the optical waveguide to an optical detector, - an optical detector for determining the temperature of the metal from an analysis of the electromagnetic radiation, - a reeling device for successively reeling off the optical waveguide from a stock and a duct, which is connected to the reeling device so that a fluid can pass through and through which fluid flows, and in which the optical waveguide is at least conducted in sections and in which the optical waveguide is transported by means of the fluid, the duct through which fluid flows and the reeling device forming a gas-tight system relative to their surroundings. The invention further relates to a plug for an outlet opening of a container which accommodates the molten metal. Said plug has a refractory rod-shaped body with an upper and a lower end, and a channel that axially extends through at least part of the rod-shaped body and leads to a surface of the lower end. In order to optically determine the temperature of molten metal an optical waveguide is conducted through the channel.

[Object] To provide a surface temperature measuring apparatus that is capable of accurately measuring a surface temperature of a temperature measurement target material such as a steel material (e.g., a wheel, a steel pipe, a steel sheet, or a rail) in a cooling process with water, and a method of measuring the same. [Solution] A surface temperature measuring apparatus 100 according to the present invention includes a radiation thermometer 1 configured to detect thermal radiation light emitted from a surface of a temperature measurement target material W in a cooling process with water, a housing 2 having an opening on a temperature measurement target material W side, the housing 2 storing, in an inside of the housing 2, at least a light receiving unit 11 of the radiation thermometer 1 among structural elements of the radiation thermometer 1, and an optical glass 3 that is fit and sealed in the inside of the housing 2 between the temperature measurement target material W and the light receiving unit 11 of the radiation thermometer 1, the optical glass 3 being configured to transmit the thermal radiation light. The present invention relates to a process for keeping a tuyere passing through a metallurgical vessel free of a skull by intermittendly passing an oxygen-containing gas through the tuyere to dissolve the skull, wherein it is determined that an interval for passing said oxygen-containing gas through the tuyere needs to be started by detecting electromagnetic radiation emanating from a spot in the interior of the melt by means of a dual wavelength pyrometer and comparing the intensity of the pyrometer signals with the ratio of the pyrometer signals, and initiating said intervall for passing said oxygen-containing gas through the tuyere, upon the condition that the combined intensity of the signals falls below a predetermined threshold value and that the ratio of the signals remains substantially constant.

A method of measuring the temperature of a hot melt by converting into temperature a light signal transmitted through an optical fiber the leading end of which is inserted into the hot melt. The temperature measurement is cyclically executed while severing by cutting any devitrified leading end portion of the optical fiber. Peak values of measured temperature, attributable to burning of components of the optical fiber, are excluded from the results of the measurement. The temperature of the hot melt is controlled based on the measured temperature as close as possible to a lower limit temperature which when not exceeded causes a reduction in fluidity of slag on the hot melt. The temperature measurement is performed by a temperature measuring apparatus which has a device for feeding the optical fiber into and out of the hot melt and a cutting device for severing the devitrified leading end portion of the optical fiber.
