Each switching unit has a plurality of input/output interfaces, whereby at least one of the plurality of input/output interfaces of each switching unit of the first group forms an input/output port of the communications system, and at least one other input/output interface of each of the switching units of the first group is connected via a communication link with an input/output interface of one of the switching units of the second group, so that a network is formed having at least one loop. The network is logically divided in at least two virtual sub-networks, each forming a spanning tree. Each switching unit of the first group is configured to assign an incoming data packet arriving at a particular input/output port to a predetermined one of the at least two virtual sub-networks. An advantage of the present invention is the ability to transparently employ the taught data communication device in different computing environments, without the requirement to alter any external equipment.

In a loop network system, a method and apparatus for automatic bypass of a node port (210) associated with a hub port (200) when the node port (210) generates a number of errors beyond a threshold level. In one aspect, a programmable error control circuit (218) provides this automatic bypass. The tolerance level is set through programmable parameters including a number of errors as well as a time interval to evaluate the number of errors detected. After a node port (210) has been bypassed by the error control circuit (218), the error control circuit (218) continues to monitor the error generation of the node port (210). When that error generation has reached an acceptable tolerance level, the error control circuit (218) automatically reinserts the node port (210) into the loop. The error control circuit (218) provides statistical reporting on the number of errors as well as the number of bypasses generated at a particular hub port (200).

A method of filtering data packets in a network device is disclosed. An incoming packet is received from a port and the incoming packet is inspected and packet fields are extracted. The incoming packet is classified based on the extracted packet fields and action instructions are generated. The incoming packet is then modified based on the action instructions. Further, the inspection and extraction includes applying inspection mask windows to any portion of the incoming packet to extract programmable packet fields.

The interface includes a plurality of downstream transmitters (502) for transmitting data packets to a plurality of end user devices (304), a plurality of downstream receivers (502) for receiving data packets from the plurality of end user devices, an upstream transmitter (522) and an upstream receiver (522). A multiplexer (512) within the interface multiplexes data packets received from the end user devices (304) into a stream of data packets for transmission to a higher level node (310) regardless of the destination address of the data packets. Conversely, a demultiplexer (508) within the interface demultiplexes a stream of data packets received from the higher level node into individual data packets for selective transmission to one of the plurality of end user devices. The interface can support asymmetrical transmission rates on the upstream and downstream channels between the interface and the end user devices.

A ring network for transporting data packets between network devices is provided. The ring network includes a number of ring switches. Each ring switch has at least one ring port, at least one local port and at least one table that self learns which network devices are associated with each port of the ring switch based on a selected source identifier from the packets processed by the ring switch. The source and destination identifiers may, for example, be a media access control (MAC) address from an Ethernet packet, an Internet Protocol (IP) address, at least a portion of a hierarchical address, a combination of two or more identifiers at different protocol levels for the data packet, a port number of a universal datagram protocol, or other appropriate identifier. The at least one ring port of each ring switch is coupled to a ring port of another ring switch in the ring network. The ring switch switches data packets between its ring and local ports to direct the data packets to specified network devices associated with the at least one local port of the ring switches in the ring network. The ports of the ring switches are configured such that data packets received at the at least one ring port and the at least one local port that are not destined for a network device associated with the at least one local port of the ring switch are switched to another ring switch on the ring network based on the at least one table without the use of a token or encapsulating the packet.

A terminal includes a first media access control unit (MAC) unit for receiving Fast Ethernet data packets at a rate of 100 Mbps for communication over a wireless link, n-1 additional MAC units for receiving Fast Ethernet data packets at a rate of 100 Mbps for communication over the wireless link, a multiplexer having n inputs, wherein each input is coupled to receive the data packets from a corresponding one of the MAC units and wherein the output of the multiplexer provides time-division multiplexed data, a packet formatting apparatus coupled to the output of the multiplexer for formatting the time division multiplexed data according to radio frames, and a wireless transceiver coupled to the packet formatting apparatus for communicating the radio frames over a wireless link wherein the wireless link has a maximum bandwidth capacity of at least n times 100 Mbps. Each MAC unit can include a rate control unit and a rate buffer for temporarily storing data packets received by the corresponding MAC unit prior to providing them to a corresponding one of the inputs of the multiplexer. Each MAC unit can include a corresponding layer-two or layer-three switch having a 100 Mbps port. The maximum transmission rate is limited only by the bandwidth of the wireless link.
