A method for inconspicuous quieting of the transmitter in a television white space device inserts, from an application layer, information into a transport stream for transmission by the transmitter of the television white space device to produce a null window of time within the transport stream at a predetermined time. The method also transmits the transport stream by the transmitter of the television white space device and quiets the transmitter during the null window of time. The method senses, by a white space sensor of the television white space device, existing signals in the white space during the null window of time.

Digital content is extracted from single and multiple-program transport streams for subsequent non-real-time (background) transmission in a bandwidth-efficient manner. At an encoder (100), several null and/or nonessential (N/N) packets (e.g., packets of unused programs) in a transport stream are replaced by an annotation packet (AP) to obtain non-real-time packets (410). The non-real time packets are inserted into null packet locations (NU) of a real time transport stream. At a decoder (200), the annotation packets are used to regenerate a specified number of null packets to maintain the original separation of packets of the non-real time data (for timing purposes), allowing existing hardware and/or software to decode the selected program. Optionally, the non-real-time packets provide pre-encrypted programs, and decryption information is distributed to the decoders at a formal program release time specified by the program provider.

This invention provides an improved method for storing/replaying a specific program from a MPEG-2 multiple program transport stream. When storing, the method discards a related transport packet of the non-user-selected program and inserts a null packet at the corresponding discarding position, and the effective load of this null packet contains a number which indicates the number of continuously discarded packets at this position; when replaying, if the effective load of a null packet contains a specific numerical value, the method adds some null packets beside this null packet, the number of the added null packets being equal to that the specific numerical value minus one.
