摘要: Blood is passed from inlet 22 to outlet 34 axially along a shear gap between a stationary outer wall 24 and a cylindrical membrane 62 carried by a rotating spinner 50 and plasma is filtered off through the membrane and withdrawn through axial passge 76. The width of the gap and the rate of rotation of the spinner (greater than 1000 r.p.m.) are chosen such as to establish shear of from 1000 to 15,000 sec -1 across the gap and centrifugal force at the membrane of 50 gravity. The spinner 50 is driven by magnetic coupling 68, 74 from outside the housing 40, 12, 44 which thus forms a disposable unit. In a construction for separation of anti-freeze solution with white cells from frozen concentrated red cells, saline solution is introduced through a porous outer wall 12 and passes radially through the mixture to carry the anti-freeze and white cells through the membrane.

摘要: A technique for connecting a catheter to a dialysis device is provided with the dialysis device comprising a dialysate solution bag, a connecting tube, one end of which is sealingly joined to the dialysate solution bag and the other end of which is sealingly connected into a flexible, substantially transparent sterilising bag containing a sterilising medium, the sterilising bag being additionally provided with a sealed opening through which the external end of an implanted catheter or the free end of an intermediate tube (the other end of which is connected to the external end of an implanted catheter) can penetrate into the sterilising bag to complete the connection from the dialysate solution bag to the patient. The technique and device help reduce the incidence of peritonitis in patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis.

摘要: @ An implant device for peritoneal dialysis which permits a flexible catheter (20) to be removed and replaced without invasive surgery. The catheter is passed through a substantially rigid tubular percutaneous device (10) and a flexible sleeve member (12) which together form a continuous conduit from the body exterior through the peritoneal wall (16). The catheter is associated with a percutaneous tubular device so as to be removable and replaceable through the sleeve member after implantation. The catheter preferably has a relatively weak memory which gives it a tendency to maintain a compact coiled configuration near the peritoneal wall. The catheter may extend through the percutaneous device or, more preferably, terminates within the interior cavity of the percutaneous device and is sealed from the environment by means of a septum closure within the device cavity.

摘要: A two-pump single needle hemodialysis system is provided in which a flexible blood accumulator bag is located between the dialyzer and the second, venous blood pump. The accumulator bag is filled as the first, arterial blood pump is operated. Blood is pumped through the dialyzer and into the bag until the bag is full and taut. At this time, a rise in pressure is detected and the venous blood pump is activated to withdraw blood from the accumulator bag. The use of the accumulator bag assures that low blood pressures are maintained in the system.

摘要: There is provided a dialysis apparatus which includes' first means for supplying dialysis fluid, second means for receiving, heating and weighing dialysis fluid, third means for receiving and weighing a quantity of dialysis fluid, a catheter, and structure which supports the first means above the second means, the second means above the catheter, and the third means below the catheter. A first flow path interconnects the first and second means, while a second flow path interconnects the second means in the catheter. A third flow path interconnects the catheter in the third means. Valve means are provided for selectively (i) blocking the first and third paths while leaving the second path open, (ii) blocking the second and third paths while leaving the first path open, and (iii) blocking the second path while leaving the first and third paths open. A timer/computer is provided which is able to maintain mode (i) until a preselected reduction in weight occurs at the second means, following which it switches to and maintains mode (ii), following which it switches to and maintains mode (iii).

摘要: An improved peritoneal dialysis solution comprises the conventional electrolyte combination of sodium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, lactate, and sodium hydroxide, the improvement comprising the use of a glucose polymer as the osmotic agent. In a preferred embodiment, the glucose polymer is found in a concentration of from 30 to 125 grams per liter. The large size of the glucose polymer molecules delays their passage through the peritoneum. In addition, the large glucose polymer molecules are slow to be metabolized in the blood. As a result, caloric intake is reduced and the length of time selective osmotic pressure may be applied is increased. Better B.U.N. (Blood Urea and Nitrogen) and creatinine clearances are thereby obtained, and the number of dialyses required can be reduced. Also disclosed is a method of use thereof.
