There are provided crystallized borosilicate glass zeolite catalysts which are para-selective in the alkylation of benzene and derivatives thereof and beta-selective in the alkylation of naphthalene and derivatives thereof. There is provided a process for the production of such catalysts wherein a borosilicate type glass is reacted with a zeolite synthesis template. There is also provided a selective alkylation process for the alkylation of benzene and its derivatives and of naphthalene and its derivatives wherein these are reacted with an alkylation agent in the presence of such catalyst.

A synthetic porous zeolite, identified as ZSM-57, a method for its preparation and use thereof in catalytic conversion of organic compounds are disclosed. The crystalline zeolite has a molar ratio of XO,: Y,O, of at least 4, wherein X represents silicon and/or germanium and Y represents aluminum, boron, chromium, iron and/or gallium and the characteristic X-ray diffraction shown in Table 1. A method for promoting the activity and/or extending the life of a cation-exchangeable layered clay catalyst in reactions susceptible to catalysis by protons which method comprises the addition to the catalyst of water as the sole additive. The quantity of water employed is suitably up to 40°C. preferably up to 10% based on weight of reactants. The layered clay catalyst can be for example montmorillonite, bentonite or vermiculite. Suitable proton catalysed reactions include formation of esters, (eg by reaction of olefin and carboxylic acid), ethers, aldehydes, thioethers and alkylation and cracking reactions.
