An age-hardening copper-base alloy and processing method to make a commercially useful strip product for applications requiring high yield strength and moderately high electrical conductivity, in a strip, plate, wire, foil, tube, powder or cast form. The alloys are particularly suited for use in electrical connectors and interconnections. The alloys contain Cu-Ti-X where X is selected from Ni, Fe, Sn, P, Al, Zn, Si, Pb, Be, Mn, Mg, Ag, As, Sb, Zr, B, Cr and Co. and combinations thereof. The alloys offer excellent combinations of yield strength, and electrical conductivity, with excellent stress relaxation resistance. The yield strength is at least of 724 MPa (105 ksi) and the electrical conductivity is at least 50% IACS.

An induction hardening apparatus (20) for inductively heating and quench hardening a crankshaft (21) includes an arrangement of two workstations (33, 36) similarly configured and a robotic device (37) indexing the crankshaft from a first workstation to a second workstation. The induction hardening apparatus is designed with a single induction coil (48) located at the first workstation for the sequential induction heating and quench hardening of the pins of the crankshaft. At the second workstation, a single induction coil (63) is used for the bearing surfaces of the crankshaft. One feature of the present invention is that the induction coils do not contact the surfaces of the crankshaft which are being inductively heated and quench hardened. Crankshaft dimensions and geometry are programmed into servodrive systems (49, 51) which move the corresponding coil in X and Y directions accurately tracing the orbit or path of each pin and each bearing surface. Another feature of the present invention is the use of an offset 180 degree coil (310) which provides improved heating patterns in less time than traditional 90 degree coils.

The present invention employs an optimized cross-sectional shape for a ferromagnetic shape memory alloy (FSMA) composite that is used in a spring-type actuator, an improved hybrid magnetic trigger for use in FSMA based actuators, an a FSMA composite based spring type actuator, an a FSMA based spring type actuator including a stack of triggering units and FSMA springs, a FSMA composite based torque actuator. The invention also includes a model that can be employed to evaluate different materials being considered as components a FSMA for a FSMA composite used in either a FSMA based torque actuator or a FSMA spring actuator.
