Ein selbsttätig schaltbarer Ventilator für das Kühlsystem von Kraftfahrzeugen, umfassend einen als gasdichter Behälter mit einer festen und einer nachgiebigen Wandung ausgebildeten Thermostaten (20,50,51,52), der eine Flüssigkeit enthält, deren Dampfdruck in einem vorgegebenen Temperaturbereich über eine Reibungskupplung den Ventilator an die Antriebswelle des Motors ankuppelt, ist dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der Thermostat (20,50,51,52) als ein Metallbalg (31,32,33,50,51,52) ausgebildet ist, der sich gemeinsam mit der Wasserpumpenwelle (2) dreht. Die Balgabmessungen sind so gewählt, daß der bei der Rotation des Thermostaten aufgrund der auf das Füllmedium des Thermostaten ausgeübten Fliehkräfte entstehende Flüssigkeitsring praktisch außerhalb das wirksamen Balgquerschnittes (a W ) verbleibt und die Ankupplung des Ventilators (13,14,15,16) in einem vorgegebenen Temperaturbereich praktisch ausschließlich durch den im Thermostat entstehenden Dampfdruck des Füllmediums bewirkt wird oder die Füllmenge des im Thermostaten befindlichen, flüssigen Mediums ist so gewählt, daß der beim Umlauf des Thermostaten mit der Wasserpumpenwelle, aufgrund der auf das Füllmedium wirkenden Fliehkräfte entstehende Flüssigkeitsring praktisch außerhalb des wirksamen Querschnittes (a W ) des Metallbalgs verbleibt und die Ankupplung des Ventilators praktisch ausschließlich durch den in dem vorgegebenen Temperaturbereich im Thermostat entstehenden Dampfdruck bewirkt wird.

A fluid coupling device (15) is disclosed of the type including an output coupling assembly (67) and an input coupling member (81) with a shear space (90) disposed therebetween. The coupling device includes a valve assembly (117) to control the flow of fluid from a reservoir chamber (99) into the shear space (90). Movement of the valve assembly (117) is in response to variations in air pressure in a pressure chamber (59), tending to bias a piston (57) and shaft (93) in opposition to the force of a spring (113). Axial movement of the shaft (93) is translated into movement of a valve arm (127) in a plane parallel to the plane of a fluid port (119) by means of a valve actuation mechanism (109). In the subject embodiment, axial movement of a valve actuation piston (111) results in rotation of the valve assembly (117) aboutthe axis of rotation of the device (15) for improved valve action in a remote sensing type of fluid coupling device.

A vehicle includes an engine that powers a wheel through a drive train. The drive train includes a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and toothed gearing disposed between the CVT and the wheel. A release clutch is also disposed between the CVT and the wheel. A controller controls the release clutch so as to disengage the clutch when the engine is not running and engage the clutch when the engine is running. The controller includes a hydraulic cylinder that fluidly connects to the engine's oil system so that engine-generated oil pressure engages the release clutch. Disengagement of the release clutch makes it easier to push the vehicle when the engine is not running, for example, when the engine breaks down.

A thermal clutch assembly is comprised of a radially inner rotatable member, a radially outer rotatable member a pair of axially spaced apart ring structures, and a thin tension web. The ring structures are both affixed to and rotate with one of the rotatable members and each has at least one substantially axial surface which may contact substantially axial surfaces of the other rotatable member. The tension web has high tensile strength, a high surface area to volume ratio, a thermally efficient flow arrangement to the surrounding medium, and high thermal conductivity. The tension web is secured to each of the two ring structures and substantially spans the space between the substantially axial surfaces of the ring structures, the web having a significantly higher thermal coefficient of expansion than the material between the substantially axial surfaces of the other rotatable member. In this manner, the web is in tension at temperatures of the surrounding medium below a predetermined temperature thereby causing the substantially axial surfaces of the ring structures to engage the substantially axial surfaces of the other rotatable member for coupling the two rotatable members for rotating together, and is not in tension at temperatures of the surrounding medium at or above the predetermined temperature thereby causing the substantially axial surfaces of the ring structures to disengage from the substantially axial surfaces of the other rotating structure for de-coupling the two rotatable members so they do not rotate together.
