Auf diese Weise lässt sich die Zündspannung der Lampe verringern. Optional wird in Ergänzung dazu der Querschnitt der Ansetzstege erhöht, wodurch sich auch die Geschwindigkeit des Lichtanlaufstromes erhöht.

A first glass cylinder (228) made of a doped quartz material and capable of transmitting ultraviolet radiation in the wavelength range of approximately 254 nanometers is positioned adjacent a second glass cylinder (230) made of a quartz material capable of transmitting ultraviolet radiation in the wavelength range of approximately 185 nanometers. The first and second glass cylinders (228,230) are connected by a perpendicular glass tube (236). The compact germicidal lamp (210), when used in a germicidal system (540), provides effective germicidal action in a small space. The germicidal lamp (210) of the present invention is more easily manufactured than prior germicidal lamps and can be made having a high power.

According to the invention, a spacer (24) is placed in such a way that when the electrode cover (16) unintentionally is moved from its mounting position in a radial direction relative to the longitudinal axis of the glass tube (4), contact occurs between the electrode cover (16) and the spacer (24), and between the spacer (24) and the inside of the wall of the glass tube (4), preventing the movement of the electrode cover (16) before it comes into direct contact with the inside of the wall of the glass tube (4). Thereby is prevented that the tubular fluorescent lamp cracks and may fall out from its fittings. The spacer is preferably a mica plate (24) with larger diameter than the electrode cover (16).
