    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust emission control device for internal combustion engine capable of recovering the catalyst function over the whole catalyst converter when a poisoning recovering process is to be conducted. SOLUTION: The exhaust emission control device of internal combustion engine is equipped with a catalyst converter 30 for purifying the exhaust gas installed in the exhaust passage 19 and an inverting mechanism 40 to invert the upstream part and downstream part of the catalyst converter 30 to each other. The HC and CO contents of the exhaust gas are increased by performing low temperature combustion in which the EGR rate is increased for dropping the combustion temperature, and using them as reducing agent, the SOx stored in the catalyst converter 30 is reduced and emitted. At this time of reduction process, the control device stops the inversion by the mechanism 40 temporarily, and admits inversion made thereby 40 on the condition that the SOx concentration sensed by an SOx sensor 53 is judged as below the specified level.

SOLUTION: This engine exhaust emission control device is constituted to once collect the particulates included in the exhaust gas, by the filter 22 disposed in an exhaust pipe 70 to remove the particulates, and to remove the collected particulates by oxidation to regenerate the filter. The filter 22 removes the collected particulates by oxidation without generating a luminous flame when the quantity of engine exhaust particulates per unit time is less than the quantity of oxidation removable particulates. A smoke sensor 102 is installed downstream of the filter in the exhaust pipe 70 to detect the concentration of the particulates in the exhaust gas, and an oxidation removal accelerating means is provided for accelerating the oxidation removal of the particulates on the filter when the output value of the smoke sensor 102 exceeds the threshold value.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To sharply reduce the discharge quantity of unburned HC while securing the stable operation of an engine by nearly fully closing an exhaust control valve, burning the main fuel witch excessive air, and additionally injecting the auxiliary fuel in an expansion stroke or in an exhaust stroke during the operation for reducing the discharge quantity of the unburned HC into the atmosphere. SOLUTION: An exhaust control valve 24 is provided in an exhaust pipe 22 extending from a common exhaust pipe 21 connected with two exhaust manifolds 19, 20 in this four-cylinder diesel engine, and fuels are fed to fuel injection valves 6 provided in individual cylinders via a common rail 27. Whether the discharge quantity of the unburned HC into the atmosphere should be reduced or not is judged during the warmup operation of the engine. If this judgment is YES, the exhaust control valve 24 is nearly fully closed, and the main fuel injected from the fuel injection valves 6 is burned with excessive air. The auxiliary fuel is additionally injected at the predetermined timing in an expansion stroke or in an exhaust stroke, thereby the discharge of the unburned HC is suppressed.
