PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for inducing an antigen-specific immune response in a mammalian subject.SOLUTION: The method includes steps of administering to the subject an effective amount of a first composition comprising a DNA plasmid comprising a DNA sequence encoding the antigen under the control of regulatory sequences directing expression thereof in a mammalian or vertebrate cell. The method also includes administering to the subject an effective amount of a second composition comprising a recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus (rVSV) comprising a nucleic acid sequence encoding the antigen under the control of regulatory sequences directing expression thereof in the mammalian or vertebrate cell. The rVSV in the second composition is in one embodiment replication competent.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide live, attenuated respiratory syncytial viruses (RSV) useful as vaccines against RSV infection and/or the development of severe RSV-associated illnesses.SOLUTION: The live, attenuated RSV is identified by continuous passage of hRSV A strain (Merck strain 287). The attenuated virus is nonpathogenic and attenuated to some extent when administered to the subject, but substantially retains the antigenic and immunogenic properties of wild-type RSV. A method for inducing a protective immune response against the RSV infection in the subject's body includes a step of administering one or more of immunogenic composition including an attenuated RSV population and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.

SOLUTION: The invention provides compositions designed to reduce or prevent bacterial infections (for example, pneumococcal infections), nasal carriage, nasal colonization, and central nervous system invasion, and also provides a composition comprising a pneumococcal neuraminidase, phosphocholine, pneumococcal teichoic acid, pneumococcal lipoteichoic acid, or an antigenic portion of either neuraminidase, phosphocholine, pneumococcal teichoic acid, pneumococcal lipoteichoic acid. The invention also provides methods for producing and using the compositions disclosed herein, specifically, provides methods for generating antibodies in a subject including a step of administering an agent or composition taught herein to the subject. The invention also provides methods for reducing or preventing nasal carriage or pneumococcal infection in the subject including a step of administering the composition taught herein to the subject.
