PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved production method for 3,3-dimethylbutanal which is a useful raw material for producing N-[N-(3,3-dimethylbutyl)-1-α-aspartyl]-L-phenylalanine=1-methylester (neotame). SOLUTION: The production method of 3,3-dimethylbutanal comprises the following. Intermediate 3,3-dimethylbutanol is obtained by (1) hydrolyzing a 3,3-dimethylbutyl ester obtained by reacting isobutylene, ethylene, and a mineral acid, alternatively by (2) contacting 3,3-dimethylbutanoic acid or an ester thereof with a reducing agent, or (3) by hydrolyzing a substrate chosen from a group consisting of 1-halo-3,3-dimethylbutane and 1-acyloxy-3,3-dimethylbutane, and further catalyst-dehydrogenation of the alcohol is carried out. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preparing 3,3-dimethylbutyraldehyde from 3,3-dimethylbutanol using an oxidizing component. SOLUTION: The 3,3-dimethylbutanol is oxidized to the 3,3-dimethylbutyraldehyde in the vapor phase by contacting the 3,3-dimethylbutanol with an oxidizing metal oxide compound. Alternatively, the oxidation of the 3,3-dimethylbutanol is carried out by treating it with a 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy free radical and an oxidizing agent in a solvent, to produce the 3,3-dimethylbutyraldehyde. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrially feasible method for producing 3,3-dimethylbutyraldehyde, wherein byproducts having malodor and toxicity are not generated, and an expensive catalyst is not used.SOLUTION: The method for preparing 3,3-dimethylbutyraldehyde includes a step of contacting 3,3-dimethylbutanol with: an oxidizing metal oxide (i) such as copper oxide (II); or an oxidizing component (ii) selected from a group comprising a 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy free radical and an oxidant such as sodium hypochlorite.
