PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of modulating mammalian stem cells or progenitor cell differentiation. SOLUTION: The method comprises modulating differentiation of mammalian stem cells, and a step of differentiating stem cells in the presence of a compound which inhibits TNF-α activity under appropriate conditions, in which the compound does not include polypeptides, peptides, proteins, hormones, cytokines, oligonucleotides, or nucleic acids. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for decreasing a level of TNFα in a mammal by solving the problem that production of excess or unlimited TNFα gives rise to a numerous disorders since TNFα relates to bone resorption disorders such as, for example, arthritis which is known as a disorder for TNFα makes leucocytes generate bone resorption activity when activated, and a compound and a composition useful for the same.
